Juneteenth, celebrated on June 19, marks the day in 1865 when the last enslaved people in Texas learned they were free—more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.
Today we honor this important moment in American history by reflecting on freedom, resilience, and the ongoing pursuit of equity. Juneteenth invites us to learn, remember, and celebrate together.
While there are two flag designs associated with Juneteenth, you may often see a black, green and red flag, which symbolizes the people, the land, and the blood which was spilt in the fight for freedom and liberation.

Happy Flag Day! Celebrate with some fun facts and flag etiquette!
The first Stars and Stripes was adopted on June 14, 1777. We've had 27 different versions, with the newest version designed by a high school student from Ohio!
U.S. Flag Etiquette:
Stars (the Union) always go at the top right.
Display only from sunrise to sunset.
Bring the flag in at night or in bad weather.
Keep it from touching the ground.
Other flags fly below or to the right.
When putting the flag away, fold into a 13‑fold triangle--each fold has a special meaning!
Retire worn flags with dignity!
The library provides a free service of retiring old flags! You can deposit them in a bin by the Borrower Services desk.
