Understanding True Scope Travel can dramatically improve your long-range capability. True Scope Travel refers to the amount of usable elevation adjustment available after your rifle is properly zeroed—not just the total adjustment listed in a spec sheet.
How to Evaluate a Scope’s True Elevation Travel
James teaches a simple method:
Mount the scope on your rifle
Zero at 100 yards
Reset your turret to zero.
Dial elevation up until it stops
Count the minutes or mils
That number — not the one on the box — is your true usable elevation.
If you’re planning to shoot:
1,000 yards → 30–40 MOA is enough
1,500 yards → 60–70 MOA required
1,800–2,000 yards → 90+ MOA required
When choosing a long‑range scope, don’t be fooled by advertised elevation travel. What matters is usable travel — the amount you have left after mounting and zeroing.

Think a tripod is only for spotting scopes? Think again.
Hand-holding your binoculars works for a quick look, but when you’re spending hours behind the glass, a tripod changes everything.
Even the steadiest hands create subtle movement. Over time, that constant shake forces your eyes to work harder, leading to fatigue and making it easier to miss small details. Mounting your binoculars on a tripod creates a rock-solid image, letting your eyes relax and stay focused longer.
A stable image also makes movement stand out. The flick of an ear, a tail swish, or the flash of an antler becomes much easier to spot when the landscape isn’t moving with your hands. It also allows you to methodically grid terrain, covering every section with purpose instead of scanning at random.
More comfort. More detail. More animals found.
Pair your favorite TRACT binoculars with a tripod adapter and see what you’ve been missing.
