Can You Really Know If You’re Clean Before Your Return-to-Duty Drug Test?
If you’ve completed your SAP evaluation and you’re getting ready for your Step 5 Return-to-Duty drug test, there’s one thing you need to understand: feeling clean does not guarantee a negative test result.
In this video, Graham Sargent explains why CDL drivers should be careful about relying on how they feel or on drug detection timelines they find online.
Drug testing is based on science—not feelings. You might feel completely normal and believe a substance has left your system, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it won’t be detected during a drug test.
Graham also points out that much of the information online about how long a specific substance stays in your system can be outdated or inaccurate. Detection can vary, so drivers should be cautious about treating an internet timeline as a guarantee.
Before taking your Return-to-Duty test, make sure you understand the process and what’s required. A failed RTD test can create additional complications in your path back to safety-sensitive work.

WHO HANDLES YOUR FOLLOW-UP DRUG TESTING IN STEP 6?
Once you’ve completed your Return-to-Duty test, Step 6 is handled by your employer.
Your SAP provides the follow-up testing plan, and your employer is responsible for carrying out that plan.
That means:
✅ Your employer handles your follow-up drug testing
✅ Your employer follows the SAP’s testing schedule
✅ Your employer is responsible for managing the required testing
👉 The ball is in their court. If you’re on Step 6, make sure you understand what your employer is responsible for and stay aware of your testing requirements.

HOW DO I GET OUT OF PROHIBITED STATUS?
If your CDL is showing Prohibited status, you may be wondering what you need to do to get back on the road.
Getting out of Prohibited status requires completing the Return-to-Duty process and following the steps that apply to your situation.
That may include:
✅ Work with a qualified Substance Abuse Professional (SAP)
✅ Complete your SAP recommendations
✅ Complete the required Return-to-Duty test
✅ Make sure the required RTD steps are completed and reported

How Does the FMCSA Random Drug Testing Pool Actually Work?
Many drivers may think random drug testing means a company simply picks a driver's name out of a hat.
That's not how it works.
Random testing is typically managed through a consortium/third-party administrator (C/TPA) or a drug and alcohol program manager.
The selection process is generally electronically generated and scientifically based, rather than manually choosing a driver.
So what happens if you quit a company and then, a few days later, you're told to take a random test?
🚩 That can raise questions.
When a driver leaves a company, the drug and alcohol program manager needs to keep track of when drivers start and when they leave so the random testing pool stays accurate.
There can also be different types of random pools:
📌 A company may have its own pool for its drivers
📌 Smaller operators may participate in a larger pool with many other drivers
📌 Larger companies may have their own individual pool
This helps prevent a one-driver operation from being selected every single month or quarter.
💡 The lesson is simple: Random drug testing isn't supposed to be a simple name-picking process. The selection should be handled through an established, scientifically based random system.
