This very special and ornate kilim rug made in a cream wool with ornate symbology and long fringe on one side, was likely used in a wedding ceremony.
It says to me:
“Protect this union, let life continue”.

Repeated diamond motifs are not only highly protective 💎 but also representative of the womb- cycles of life and regeneration. The shapes endlessly repeating can show the continuity of family.

There is a repeated eight pointed shape or “star of wisdom” within each diamond, which encourages understanding and enlightenment. (I like these 2 concepts hand in hand).

Masculine and feminine symbols alternating together in harmony express balance and union.

This rug is about connection, I call it “The Believer”.

Two linked golden central medallions show a blissful and prosperous union. Seedpod shapes within them are for fertility while cross shapes repel negative energy, casting it to move in any other direction but here, home.

Trees of life and symbols of the eye are wishes for peace and immortality.

This piece of art was made by very optimistic and believing hands. It will glow wherever it lives.

Lately I have been absorbed by, and in deep admiration of our very special rugs. In the next few posts I will be shedding a little insight into the symbology and meaning that they carry. Not simply decorative, but profound vessels that contain amulets of protection, dreams, hopes, fears and words of those without voices.

I truly believe that the things we surround ourselves with hold onto their history along w the energy and intentions of those who made them. It’s why I have always made art, and why I was drawn to very specific pieces over time. We find the things that speak to us, match our vibration, give us what we are lacking or match us where we are.

Here are my own interpretations, shaped by historical references and research of these very unique and special pieces. Because what we choose to live with matters and voices carry on.

This custom light made for a Rockaway beach bungalow . Getting a lot of light orders in lately. For me, it’s a unique satisfaction in designing these, the small tinkering, wrapping wires, tightening screws, and watching them light up. Excited to share some new designs soon.

A place of so much beautiful craft, natural dyes, ceramic, textiles, music, color, food .. ugh the food.. so inspiring on so many levels. Oaxaca somehow always welcomes with open arms. So many of the people here say ‘I hope it feels like home’ and it does (like a hug), but better.
