Jose Picayo’s current exhibition, “35 Years in Photographs.” on exhibit through 06.21.26
Image: “Still Life of Flowers” 1997 UV on Canvas
Looking at Picayo’s body of work makes one wonder about the limits between photography and painting. His work draws inspiration from the still life paintings of seventeenth century Dutch masters, recalling works of Jan Davidsz. de Heem and Jan Steen paintings, but Picayo infuses these traditional compositions with flowers, glasses, silverware, and remains of sumptuous meals. Showcasing not only the sharpness, but also the freshness and elegance of his photography.
Though the photographs of this series are carefully staged scenes set on black background, Picayo’s compositions reflect on the transience and fragility of life.

Have you ever dreamt about what it would be like to visit Mars? Come check out "Girls on Mars", 2024 oil on canvas, by Janet Maya in our upcoming exhibition "Stillness of Architecture".
“In my work, stillness is not a lack of motion - it is an act of being present.” In “Their Still Water Runs Deep,” we are transported to the ocean shore, where faceless bathers in vintage bathing suits and bathing caps stand still in water. They dissolve into the calmness of blue blocks of color. In “Boundless Love,” a white headscarf adorns a monochromatic figure, its quick, expressive brushstrokes a tribute to the artist’s mother and the Jackie O elegance of that era. In “Gilded 2025 #1,” an arresting and formal 6-foot figure in a gold-leafed dress, long black gloves, and a tall hat fills the canvas. The surface of the dress holds reflection and density, shaping the figure into a still presence with a sense of quiet power and eminence. In “Girls Waiting on Mars,” figures are suspended on the red planet, held in a state of pause between arrival and continuation.
For Maya, “the plan is never a plan. I begin a painting by sketching directly into the paint, so I don’t lose any spontaneity. I sculpt figures using blocks of color, adding and subtracting until there is an edited space. That space invites intimacy and stillness, which creates room for the viewer’s experience.”

“Picayo, renowned for fashion and still-life photography, communicates quirky yet formal elegance. His portraits, appearing strong and severe at times, resonate with elements of humor and beauty. Refusing labels, he is very eclectic when his choice of subjects or in defining a particular style and is always consistent in his meticulous technique. His photographs can be described as vintage, yet no date can readily be placed upon them.”

This exhibition, “35 Years in Photographs" is Picayo’s 10th solo show at Robin Rice Gallery. It includes a selection of photographs spanning 1991-2025.

His photographs can be described as vintage, yet no date can readily be placed upon them.
An unapologetic user of film, Picayo, prides himself on his avoidance of digital processing for his personal work. When asked why it remains his preferred medium, Picayo answers, “Digital is so overpoweringly real; photography is more magical to me.” His passion for older photographic processes is complemented by his use of both 20” x 24” and 8” x 10” Polaroids, as well as the use of large-format cameras for his commercial work. For Picayo, large-format film is a medium where he can capture a moment in time. Just to hold the photograph in his hands is enough.

After 28 years of absence, Picayo returns to his native Cuba. He captures the world he left when he was six years old. Memories of old clothes hung to dry in the sun, and of old washbasins in the yards of his Havana neighborhood have been translated into images of a silent and evanescent presence. Showing the deterioration through the patina that time and circumstance has left upon it, these images were easily recovered. The inhabitants, the island’s architecture, and its customs seemed to be suspended in time.
