I love my farm market ‘winnings.’ I rarely go with a plan to buy anything, and I shop with my heart. This week: strawberries, garlic, bacon cheddar pierogi, eggs from my favorite feathery ladies, and garlic dill cheddar curds.
Time to plan what I'm making with all these goodies!

The meanest little wild raspberries are growing from under my porch. The bunnies love them, but my fingers say never again. 🐇

Casey always has the best view of people and I admire her for that.

A few years ago, when I was working a market for another farm, a woman concernedly pointed out that there was dirt on the carrots. They were good-looking carrots that been cleaned with a hose, but still had a few smudges that would only come off with a good scrub that should only happen right before eating. She was worried the carrots had been dropped on the ground. I explained that the dirt was just a natural byproduct of them being grown in the earth, but would be alright once scrubbed or peeled. She was surprised. She didn’t know that carrots grew in the soil, hugged by the soft earth. I still laugh a little in surprise thinking about it, but I don’t blame the woman for not knowing. I admired her willingness to learn. Our food system seems to encourage as much distance as possible between us and our food. The most common setting food is viewed in is a sanitized grocery store, where ugly or dirty foods are thrown out instead of given a chance. I think of that woman every time I harvest root vegetables. I hope she’s still excited to learn about where food comes from. This photo of freshly harvested radishes that are still covered in the soil that nourished them is for her.

I can’t believe you first yelled at me 11 years ago at and demanded to be my best friend and daughter. And here we are, seven homes, a hundred trips over the Mackinac Bridge, a million late nights at the vet, heartbreak that I think was worse on you than me, finding a hero to call your dad, a tornado warning, and so much more later. A team that can’t be stopped.

I know you’ll read this tonight, when you sneak off to the basement to do whatever magic cat things you do while I sleep. So, I love you with all my heart and soul. Forever. 💕
