DiverseWorks is excited to present NUESTROWORLD, a satirical solo installation by Brooklyn-based artist Jesus Benavente.

Mark your calendars! NuestroWorld opens on Thursday, August 13, transforming 5601 B Navigation Blvd into the NuestroWorld Visitor Center, encouraging guests to explore Houston beyond the gallery walls and experience the city as an amusement park.

Imagined as part visitor center, part gift shop, and part theme-park attraction, the immersive installation features towering banners, Tejano music paired with a custom neon video sculpture, and a 13-foot blimp roaming through the gallery. Visitors can also pick up a free NuestroWorld Amusement Guide and purchase limited-edition merchandise.

Through satire and spectacle, NuestroWorld examines how cities construct identity through tourism, branding, memory, and myth, inviting audiences to reconsider Houston’s past and present.

The installation will be on view through September 13, 2026, with a closing party on September 11. Gallery hours are Thursday - Saturday, 12 - 6 pm. Admission is free. For more information, visit https://diverseworks.org/event/jesus-benavente-nuestroworld/.

2026-27 DIVERSEWORKS INTERNSHIP APPLICATION DEADLINE: WED, JULY 29, 2026
Fall Semester (August – Dec 2026)
Spring Semester (Feb – May 2027)

Interns play a critical role in the administration and production of DiverseWorks’ overall programs and events while gaining valuable experience in the non-profit art world.

Interns will be required to make a commitment of at least 8-10 hours per week. Scheduling for this internship will be determined in conversation with DW Staff. Weekend and evening hours may be required during special events. After completing the fall semester, interns can elect to return for the spring semester to complete the season.

Emily Johnson is a Bessie Award-winning choreographer, Guggenheim, Native Arts and Cultures Foundation, and United States Artists Fellow, and recipient of the Doris Duke Artist Award. Of the Yup’ik Nation, Johnson is the artistic director of Emily Johnson / Catalyst and is based in Lenapehoking / New York City.

Since 1998, Johnson has created body-based performances that invite audiences to experience performance as a process of care and connection. Her multidisciplinary practice explores relationships to land, water, ancestors, and one another, weaving together artistic practice, environmental stewardship, Indigenous sovereignty, and community care.

As The New York Times writes, Johnson is “a magnetic performer, adept at mobilizing people, onstage and off,” whose work “draws our attention to the land beneath and around us—to what has been here before and what could be in the future.”

Join us for this inspiring evening as Johnson returns to Houston to launch a new series that brings together artists, climate advocates, and community members to imagine a more just and sustainable future.
