On the heels of our second release, Sarah Rothenberg’s ‘In Darkness and Light,’ we’re delighted to see that our inaugural release, Tyshawn Sorey’s ‘Monochromatic Light (Afterlife)’ is still making the rounds! Thank you to The Wire: Adventures In Modern Music, All Music, Jazz Weekly, and Nate Chinen for the illuminating words. We’re also grateful to Other Minds for featuring not only ‘Monochromatic Light (Afterlife)’ on their radio show, but also DACAMERA’s recording of Feldman’s ‘Rothko Chapel.’ The Philadelphia Inquirer also recently described ‘Monochromatic Light (Afterlife)’ as “one of [Sorey’s] strongest works to date.”

This past weekend, Sarah Rothenberg talked with Sarah Cahill at KALW about ‘In Darkness and Light’—the works on the record, Rothenberg’s relationship to them, and how they came together on this deeply personal collection, which she describes as “a kind of diary of my life during Covid.” Head to the link in our bio to listen to the interview!

Next Friday, May 8, Sarah Rotheberg’s ‘In Darkness and Light’ drops on DACAMERA Editions! Here, Rothenberg performs Beethoven’s final piano sonata, Sonata No. 32, Op. 111, in a concert at The Menil Collection. Rothenberg returned to this piece in the midst of the pandemic, searching for connections between the world it came from and the one she was living in. Despite the distance in time, she found that “. . .for me, alone in my living room, Beethoven still had a voice that cut through to the core of my experience.”

Vijay Iyer’s ‘For My Father,’ written for Sarah Rothenberg and featured on her upcoming release ‘In Darkness and Light,’ received its world premiere in 2022 in a DACAMERA performance at the Menil Collection. Enjoy this clip of Rothenberg’s stirring interpretation of the work, composed following the passing of Iyer’s father. As Iyer shared in his introduction at the premiere, “It is called ‘For My Father’ – it is at least to my father, but it’s for everybody.”

‘In Darkness and Light’ comes out in just over three weeks!

Conceived in response to the pandemic, the album brings together Beethoven’s final piano sonata and Morton Feldman’s last work for piano—a juxtaposition that, as Sarah Rothenberg describes, reveals a strange continuity between the journey of Beethoven’s Op. 111 and the suspended time of Feldman.

That dialogue extends with a new work by Vijay Iyer, written in 2021, placing a present-day voice alongside Beethoven’s Sonata No. 32 from 200 years earlier.

In 2021, Sarah Rothenberg conceived and directed the film ‘The Departing Landscape’ featuring her performance of Morton Feldman’s ‘Palais de Mari.’ Filmed by John Carrithers in the Arts of the Ancient World gallery at the Menil Collection, Rothenberg performs Feldman’s work surrounded by treasures dating back to 2800 B.C.E. — talismans of a distant past that inspired the composer, and which have survived to today.

“I see the film as memorializing both this current moment and the idea of transitory time. The film has an elegiac mood, conceived and created during this unprecedented COVID pandemic. I think art is what can connect us during this time of isolation, it can reveal our common experience. Feldman’s music speaks to us in this moment of suspended time. It hovers between the ancient relics, our fragile present, and the unknowns that lie ahead. It takes us somewhere larger than ourselves.” — Sarah Rothenberg

This momentous piece is one of three on Rothenberg’s upcoming release, ‘In Darkness and Light,’ out May 8. Head to the link in our bio to pre-order the release and watch the full film ‘The Departing Landscape.’

We’re just a month away from the release of Sarah Rothenberg’s ‘In Darkness and Light,’ so we’re taking a closer look at the striking work of art on its cover: ‘Delfern Tondo’ (2024) by Tacita Dean.

Dean, a British European artist based in Berlin and Los Angeles, spent several years developing work in close collaboration with The Menil Collection, where Rothenberg first encountered her work.

Rendered in chalk on blackboard paint, ‘Delfern Tondo’ reflects Dean’s fascination with natural phenomena. Its cloud forms were inspired by the shifting Houston sky, observed while lying in the grass outside the Menil, capturing a sense of motion, light, and quiet transformation.

Over the past few decades, she has collaborated with many of the leading ensembles and living composers in classical music, including Steve Reich, the London Symphony Orchestra, John Adams, Kronos Quartet, Terry Riley, Pacifica Quartet, and Philip Glass.

The third and final work on Sarah Rothenberg’s upcoming record, ‘In Darkness and Light,’ was composed for her by celebrated jazz pianist and composer Vijay Iyer.

In the spring of 2021, as the world began to reopen, Rothenberg contemplated programming Beethoven’s last sonata and Feldman’s final piano work together, and found herself wanting to include the voice of a living composer in the program. Rothenberg turned to Iyer, whose music she describes as “increasingly [defying] genre and reflect[ing] his own thoughtful perspectives.”

Inspired by Shostakovich’s 24 Preludes and Fugues, Op. 87, and his father’s “unhurried, loving spirit,” Iyer composed ‘For My Father’ following his father’s passing. The work subtly shadows Shostakovich’s form and engages in quiet dialogue with Beethoven.
