As Autism Acceptance Month comes to a close, we want to say: thank you. ππ§©
Thank you to the families who trust us with their children. Thank you to the educators and pediatricians who partner with us. Thank you to this community for showing up for neurodivergent children every single day.
This month we shared stories, busted myths, and celebrated the incredible progress happening inside our clinic. But autism acceptance doesn't end in April β it's something we carry with us year-round.
We're Arete Behavioral Solutions, and we're just getting started.

Siblings are part of the journey too. π
When one child in the family is in ABA therapy, brothers and sisters often have questions, feelings, and their own ways of wanting to help.
At Arete Behavioral Solutions, we encourage families to include siblings in the process:
π« Teach siblings about autism in age-appropriate ways
π« Model positive interaction strategies at home
π« Celebrate progress as a whole family
π« Create one-on-one time for each child
Strong sibling relationships are some of the most powerful supports a child can have. And with the right guidance, siblings can become each other's biggest cheerleaders.

Parents ask us all the time: "How do I know therapy is actually working?" π
Great question. At Arete Behavioral Solutions, we don't leave progress to guesswork. Our BCBA shares data with you regularly so you can see exactly how your child is growing.
Here's what transparent progress looks like:
π Clear baseline measurements before therapy starts
π Ongoing data tracking every session
π Monthly parent meetings to review goals
π Visual charts so you can see the trend over time
Your child's progress isn't a mystery. It's measurable, visible, and celebrated β together.

WHY WE STILL NEED AUTISM AWARENESS IN 2026 π§©
"Isn't everyone already aware of autism?"
Aware that it exists? Maybe.
But true awareness means understanding things like:
β 1 in 36 children is diagnosed with autism (CDC, 2023)
β The average age of diagnosis is still 4-5 years old β despite signs being present much earlier
β Black and Hispanic children are diagnosed later and less often, not because autism is less common, but because of systemic barriers to evaluation
β Many families wait 12+ months for an evaluation appointment
β Insurance coverage for ABA therapy varies wildly by state and plan
β There are still communities where autism is stigmatized and misunderstood
Awareness isn't just about wearing blue or sharing a puzzle piece.
It's about:
β
Pediatricians screening earlier and more consistently
β
Schools providing real support, not just compliance
β
Insurance companies covering the therapy families need
β
Communities making spaces sensory-friendly
β
Parents feeling safe to ask for help without judgment
β
Employers creating inclusive workplaces
This month matters. Not because autism needs a spotlight β but because the families navigating it every day deserve better systems, better support, and less stigma.
At Arete, we're not just raising awareness. We're doing the work β one child, one family at a time.

HOW TO PREPARE YOUR CHILD WITH AUTISM FOR A DOCTOR'S VISIT π₯
Doctor visits can be overwhelming for any kid. For children with autism, the unpredictability, sensory input, and long waits can make it especially challenging.
Here's how to set your child up for success:
BEFORE THE VISIT:
π Read a social story about going to the doctor (we can help you make one!)
πΈ Show pictures of the office, the waiting room, and the doctor if possible
ποΈ Use a visual schedule: First car, then waiting room, then doctor, then done
π¬ Practice β use a toy doctor kit to role-play what will happen
DAY OF:
π§ Bring noise-canceling headphones
π± Bring a preferred item or activity for the waiting room
β° Request the first appointment of the day (less waiting = less stress)
π£οΈ Tell the front desk your child has autism β most offices will accommodate
π Let your child wear comfortable clothes (skip the jeans if sensory is an issue)
DURING THE VISIT:
β
Ask the doctor to explain each step before doing it
β
Use a visual "first-then" board: first stethoscope, then sticker
β
Take breaks if needed β it's okay
β
Praise and reinforce every step your child tolerates
AFTER:
π Celebrate! Even if it didn't go perfectly, your child DID something hard
π¦ Follow up with a preferred activity or treat
π Write down what worked so you can repeat it next time
You know your child best. These strategies help make the unfamiliar feel safer.

TO THE PARENTS WHO AREN'T OKAY RIGHT NOW π
This one isn't educational. It's just honest.
Some days are hard.
Some days your child has a meltdown in the grocery store and strangers stare. Some days you cancel plans again because it's just too much. Some days you cry in the car after drop-off. Some days you Google things at 2am that terrify you.
And some days you wonder if you're doing enough.
You are.
Here's what I want you to know:
You are not failing. You are fighting for your child every single day β even on the days it doesn't feel like it.
The fact that you're researching therapies, reading posts like this, showing up to appointments, advocating at IEP meetings, learning new strategies...
That's not "the bare minimum." That's extraordinary.
Your child doesn't need a perfect parent. They need a present one. And you're here.
If you need support, we're here too. Not just for your child β for your whole family.

Weekend plans? Make them family-friendly and therapeutic! π
You don't need a therapy room to practice skills. Houston has so many great options for families:
π³ Hermann Park β nature walks and playground time
π¨ Children's Museum of Houston β sensory-rich exploration
πΎ Houston Zoo β social skills and routine practice
π Local splash pads β sensory play and motor skills
The best part? These activities reinforce what your child learns in ABA therapy β naturally and joyfully.
What are your family's favorite Houston spots? Share below!

The magic word in ABA therapy? Reinforcement. π
Positive reinforcement is the backbone of everything we do at Arete Behavioral Solutions. It means rewarding the behaviors and skills we want to see more of β and it works because it taps into what motivates YOUR child.
For one child, it might be a favorite toy. For another, it's a high five. For another, it's extra time with a preferred activity.
The key? Finding what lights up YOUR child and using it to build skills, confidence, and independence.
That's personalized ABA therapy. That's Arete.
