Do you remember the great debate over new CDC milestones (*cough* that occurred without SLP input *cough*)?
Well, we're back with some data - and while we appreciate the effort to provide clarity regarding typical development, new findings indicate the CDC's milestones are likely under-identifying kids who may need support.

The research:

Visual description: A cartoon of two parents engrossed in watching a news report on a TV screen. The report showcases a group of toddlers effortlessly stepping over a series of hurdles placed in their path. Each hurdle is neatly labeled with important developmental milestones: "says 1-2 words," "follows simple directions," "requests via pointing," and "points to body parts." The news report is titled "CDC Milestones Hurdle," indicating its connection to childhood development guidelines. Amidst the scene, one parent turns to the other, a hint of skepticism in their expression. With a touch of lighthearted disbelief, they remark, "I think maybe they set these too low..."

➡️Here’s why the advice to “wait and see” is not only unhelpful, but can potentially be harmful
🌈 Research on brain development shows that this is the time we can make the biggest difference. Pathways in the brain develop rapidly during this time and the brain is most sensitive to learning through experiences and interactions.
🌈 Early Speech and language development is related to school readiness, academic outcomes, social skills, and behavior.
🌈 When we support these speech development later on, it impacts these areas later on 🙌🏻

✋🏻Hey, I'm Brooke and I'm so glad you're here!
🌈As a parent, I get it! We all want the very best for our little ones. And when they're not meeting milestones, it can be stress and overwhelming!
🌈I also get it because I've been there. My daughter started physical and occupational therapy early on due to low muscle tone and torticollis. What I remember most is how helpless I felt because I didn't know how to help her
🌈Everything changed when we got the right support. Knowing how to support Aubrey at home was what made the biggest difference.
🌈As parents, we really are in a unique position to support our little ones with their development. That's why I created a digital course and virtual consults to help YOU help your toddler talk!
👉🏻Research shows that when parents are trained in speech therapy strategies, little ones get as much as 18 hours of speech therapy (Roberts & Kaiser) That is powerful! 💯

➡️Gestures are speech milestones too!
⭐️The following information is from: About 16 by16 – First Words Project
👉🏻Gestures and speech are connected. Children develop the gesture if pointing, reaching, and giving before they say their first words.
💬Research shows that the development of gestures from 9 to 16 months predicts language ability 2 years later, which is significant because preschool language skills predict academic success.” (1) That's because gestures and speech are both about symbolic communication
☀️While we may see some variation depending on a child’s family or culture, having 16 gestures by 16 months is an important milestone because it helps little ones move from first words into the vocabulary explosion, the period of time we see children start rapidly acquiring new words, expected between 18-21 months.
