The Menil Collection opened to the public on this day in 1987.
Available in the Menil Bookstore is the dual biography "Double Vision: The Unerring Eye of Art World Avatars Dominique and John de Menil." The book, by journalist and editor William Middleton, "goes into much detail about how [the couple] were able to so clearly put their stamp on Houston," the Houston Press wrote in a review. "The de Menils' story doesn't just belong to Houston or Paris or London; the story belongs to the world."

In 1977–78, Cy Twombly produced a "painting in 10 parts," inspired by Alexander Pope's translation of Homer's "Iliad."
Available at the Menil Bookstore is "Cy Twombly: Fifty Days at Iliam," a color reproduction of the artist's 10 large canvases evoking moments from Homer's epic poem.

Among the new titles available at the Menil Bookstore, find "Notes to a Black Woman" by Françoise Ega and "Diasporic Threads: Black Women, Fibre & Textiles" by Sharbreon Plummer.
In "Notes to a Black Woman," Ega chronicles the experiences of domestic workers lured from their Caribbean homes to France, exposing their unjust living and working conditions and defending the dignity of migrant laborers. The zine "Diasporic Threads" surveys the history of Black women's contributions to art and history through fiber-related media, spotlighting five artists and their practices amid the intersections of race, art, and cultural memory.

The new title "Matthew Wong: Interiors" accompanies the artist's landmark solo exhibition at the 2026 Venice Biennale. Through painting and drawing, Wong examined the architecture and psychology of interior spaces. "These paintings are extremely open and vulnerable. But once they lure you in, they leave you alone to explore their chromatic, spatial, and psychological complexities," wrote The New York Times.
