Praying mantis can and will capture, kill and eat a hummingbird if the opportunity presents itself. To me, the comical aspect of it is the hummingbird feeder. These are always strategically placed in an area with maximum visibility in the hope that the garden in which they are positioned might be graced with these hovering marvels, attracted by its sugary nectar. In short, it seems that even the most innocuous intervention can have grave unintended consequences. A universal want simply means potential intruders are always sure to come calling when food is around. The sugar might not be what is attracting the mantis specifically, but other highly edible bugs will see it as a free lunch, and these freeloaders will draw in anything looking to feast on them. Since the mantis is such a formidable hunter, being there for the bugs doesn't mean they are her only options. This is not to say their use should be condemned; hummingbirds are some of the coolest creatures in existence and the frequency that something like this might happen is very low - hardly a reason to stop using a feeder.
