Looking for ways to stay cool this summer? Students from Baylor Medicine will be distributing heat safety kits this Saturday at Shamba! Stop by to pick yours up and learn some tips for staying well in the heat. We’ll see you there!

As part of our collaborative work with Harris County Public Health, our WEG members participated in a nutrition class and a fun cooking demonstration! Leaders from had this to say:

“It was an exciting and unique experience to be able to educate in Swahili! We had an interactive discussion on the overview of the US food environment and the importance of making healthy food choices. In addition, we had a cooking demonstration where the participants learned a new recipe and how the use of spices can both flavor and provide health benefits. It was a warm and engaging class, and we’re looking forward to another session!”

What an incredible Bingo night for 2026! The FAM community showed up in so many ways: the spirit of joy in the room, the delight of familiar friends alongside new faces, and the generosity propelling us past our fundraising goal for a total of $37,421 raised! Thanks to everyone who volunteered, planned, donated, shared their stories, and celebrated with us. The work of FAM Houston doesn’t happen without you, and we are so grateful.

In honor of Volunteer Appreciation Month, the City of Houston held the Mayor’s Volunteer Awards Ceremony on April 23. Effa Longe, who was nominated by Kelsey Johnson, Shamba Volunteer Coordinator, was recognized at the event. We appreciate Effa’s dedication to the farm and every single volunteer who gives of their time and shares their love with this community! Asante sana! Thank you so much.

Our English level 1 students are mastering “being verbs” and times of day! So proud of each woman committed to learning, and grateful for our teacher Orarean and !
