Here’s more about them! 👇🏼
Ms. Rebecca uses these songwriting techniques when she has writer’s block :)
1. go somewhere new (write about it)
Step outside your usual orbit ... a coffee shop you’ve never tried, a park bench in an unfamiliar neighborhood, a laundromat at midnight. Sit with the discomfort of not knowing the place. Notice what pulls your attention: the smell, the light, the strangers. Let the newness shake something loose and write from inside that feeling.
2. find an old memory (be specific)
Not “a summer when I was young” ... the exact afternoon, the color of the towel, the song that was playing. The more granular you get, the more alive it becomes. Specificity is what separates a memory from a story worth telling. What did your hands feel like? What were you avoiding thinking about?
3. write from someone else’s pov
Pick someone you know well or not at all ... a parent, a stranger on the train, a character from a show you love. Inhabit them fully. What do they notice that you wouldn’t? What do they want that they’ll never say out loud? Let them surprise you.
4. take a line from a story & expand on it
Find a sentence from a book, a film, a song lyric ... something that already carries weight. Ask what happened just before it. Ask what it cost someone to say. Use it as a door into a world that already half-exists.
5. pick random words & find new connections
Grab five words with no connection ... a color, a tool, a weather event, an emotion, a food. Now force them to belong together. The constraint is the point. Rhyme if you want, but don’t if it feels cheap. Let the words find each other.

In this video, Ms. Tara explores the power of “When You Believe” by focusing on how to belt with genuine ease and longevity. 🎶✨
Instead of pushing from the throat, Ms. Tara leans into the breath to let the high notes soar naturally and safely. 🌬️🎤 It is a reminder that when we lead with emotion rather than force, we can protect our voice while still sharing a deeply moving performance. 💫
Do you have questions about belting? Put them in the comments! 👇💬

In honor of Black History Month, we wanted to share this important historical song from the 1950s/60s.

Deeply inspired by what she heard, HomeNote's own Ms. Tara re-visited this important era of American History in her choral fusion arrangement of a Sufi favorite "Sanson ki Mala" and "Eyes on the Prize" which appeared in the national touring theatrical production "Stories: Our American Journey."
At HomeNote, we foster learning not just in music, but also in the stories and context behind each piece our students perform.
Eyes on the Prize theme song Civil rights song from the 60's.
