Industrial disinfectants typically contain a blend of alcohols, phenols, aldehydes, and detergents.
After using such products, it is important to thoroughly rinse the treated surfaces with plenty of clean water to completely remove any harmful residues.
I recently discovered an excellent product that helps me keep my African violet growing area clean, and I would like to share some information about it with you. You simply spray it on and wipe the surface—it works wonderfully, ensuring complete sterility.

🌿 GrowViolet followers often ask us questions, and we are always happy to share our experience in growing African violets. Today, we’ll answer the most popular ones.

❓ Why do we use zip-lock plastic bags for rooting and growing leaf cuttings?

✅ We have a very large collection, and it is simply impossible to attend to every planted leaf on a daily basis. That is precisely why we have been using this method for years.

We plant the leaf in moist soil, place it in a zip-lock bag, and put it under grow lights. Then, we essentially forget about it for about a month—the leaves require almost no maintenance. After a month, we begin checking their condition regularly.

We water them right inside the bag using a standard bulb syringe. This is very convenient as it allows for precise control over the water amount: some leaves need a bit more moisture, while others require just a few drops.

❓ How long does it take for a leaf cutting to produce "babies" (young plantlets)?

✅ It depends largely on the age of the leaf.

A leaf taken from a mature African violet (2–3 years old) may take a very long time to produce offspring, or sometimes "babies" may not appear at all. Young, healthy leaves usually produce offspring much faster—in about 2–3 months.

❓ Can the leaves be taken out of the bag as soon as the "babies" appear?

✅ We usually plant many leaves at once, so the "babies" often appear around the same time. Once the majority of the leaves have produced offspring, we remove them from the bags and gradually acclimate them to standard humidity levels.

After that, we continue growing them under lights and mist them with a spray bottle about once every 3–4 days.

Rooting cuttings requires light, warmth, and moisture.
Planted cuttings should be kept in a mini-greenhouse—such as a clear plastic container or a plastic bag—until "plantlets" appear.
This ensures the high humidity that violets need, especially after the stress of propagation.
Under these conditions, the leaves adapt more quickly, and the young plants develop much more vigorously than they would in the dry air of a typical apartment.
With this method, the cuttings can go up to a month without watering.
It is important to provide reliable, consistent artificial lighting and maintain a steady temperature. If artificial lighting is unavailable, the cuttings can be placed in a well-lit spot, provided they are protected from direct sunlight.
