In addition, our programs promote healthy social and emotional development in all children and families. Our Strategy is to train individuals to deliver our solutions to children and youth of greater Houston and measurably influence their awareness, beliefs and attitudes. This promotes healthy decision-making skills which are proven to prevent risky behaviors and abuse.

Our Story
Founded in 1974 by a group of child advocates dedicated to improving mental health services for Houston-area children, the core of ChildBuilders’ work has evolved from expanding treatment options for children with mental illness to preventing the abuse and trauma that contributes to mental illness in today’s youth.
ChildBuilders is the only organization in Houston promoting a primary prevention model to put an end to abuse before a crisis occurs. This model involves training and building a community that protects children from bullying, internet dangers, abuse, neglect, and relationship violence and supports all families regardless of socioeconomic status, race, or level of education. Our mission focuses on preventing trauma and abuse by teaching children Pre-K through 12th grade the skills they need to protect themselves and each other, while also empowering parents and teachers to keep their children and communities safe. Our three-tiered approach to primary prevention offers cost-effective, sustainable education and awareness solutions for training school personnel, community volunteers, and parents to help Houston’s youth to: 1) identify and avoid unsafe situations, 2) develop empathy, resilience, and strong decision-making skills, and 3) establish and maintain healthy relationships now and in the future. We serve all children and families in the greater Houston area, believing that every child can benefit from the training we provide.
The Texas Education Code, Sections 38.004 and 38.0041 require schools to implement a systematic approach to training their students and staff to stand up to the challenges of abuse and neglect. ChildBuilders is one of a handful of organizations offering a menu of education and training programs to schools in the greater Houston area to help them meet this requirement. We are the only local organization providing engaging, research-based professional development and child-appropriate curriculum solutions that prevent abuse and promote mental health in children and adolescents.
