Do you know the chemical names or structures of caffeine: 1, 3, 7 trimethylPURINE, 2,6 dione? I have been educating patients for years about the function of foods and their ingredients and caffeine is always one of the nutrients on my radar.
The question comes up several times.
"Tab, are you telling me I better quit coffee?'"
The answer is complex and, quite frankly, depends on many factors. The main philosophy to communicate to the community is my role as a registered dietitian and my core beliefs:
1) I do not believe in "quitting" in anything. I learned that at an early age (Thanks ). The goal is success in everything we do. If the process works, then keep it going. If the protocol falls short, then find ways to improve.
2) It does not work to tell anyone over the age of 12 or 13 what they "better not do" and think the advice is to cause them to make healthy choices for life.
3) As executive health educators, dietitians strive for patient autonomy. When a patient is dealing with gout, kidney stones, osteoporosis, high uric acid levels, and/or blood pressure issues, I believe it helps to educate them on the role nutrients play in the body. This is the epitome of holistic wellness — evidence-based, science-based informed decisions in food consumption.

Wow! This is the first time I can recall the USDA issuing a public health alert based on the nutrient content of a food item.
Way to go, USDA - Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) !
The sodium nitrate content in uncooked pork/beef bacon exceeds the daily regulated limit! Well, Masters In Dietetics patients have never included these products in the meat group, so it should not be a big switch for you.
Here is the link to the FSIS public health alert:
FSIS Issues Public Health Alert For Not-Ready-To-Eat Pork And Beef Bacon Products Due to Sodium Nitrite Levels in Excess of Regulatory Limit | Food Safety and Inspection Service The .gov means it’s official. Federal government websites often end in .gov or .mil. Before sharing sensitive information, make sure you’re on a federal government site.
