Did you know that long before the Port of Houston became a modern intermodal powerhouse, its earliest form of intermodal transport began with barges navigating Buffalo Bayou in the 1800s?

These barges carried cargo from the foot of Main Street in Houston to Galveston. This primitive intermodal system was Houston’s first attempt at integrating multiple modes of transport to support growing commerce.

As cargo volumes increased, the lack of a deepwater port became the ultimate obstacle. Civic leaders pushed for the creation of the Houston Ship Channel, which opened in 1914. This transformed Houston into a true intermodal hub, allowing seamless transfers between ships, trains, and trucks.
