Have Some FUN Every day and Every week

When I’m coaching my clients, I’m always surprised to find that the hardest homework I assign is “Do something Fun this week!” The responses I get range from silence to anger. Some say, “I don’t have any idea how to do that”. Some say “I hate it when you give me that assignment”! Either way, it seems that fun has been forgotten or given a real back seat in our lives.

Fun is important! It’s one of the ways to give ourselves balance, an escape from our worries, an infusion of energy, and it’s an important gateway to our creativity! When someone tells me “I feel stuck” or “I just can’t seem to get any new ideas”, I say take some time off and have some fun. Invariably, after the fun the blocks miraculously disappear.

Another problem with fun is that most of us leave it for the “leftover time”. We think, “When I get everything finished, I’ll take time for fun”. We all need to realize that as a society, we never get “finished”. The best we can strive for in today’s world is to be complete for the day. Finished is an unrealistic goal.

Fun has to be scheduled. We have to keep our appointments for fun just as intently as we do for work. To think that it will “just happen” is naïve.

Please take time to have fun every day in some small way and then plan a few fun events every week. I guarantee you’re stress will diminish, your mood will lighten and you’re creativity will greatly improve. Besides, with all the hard work you do, You Deserve It!

OK, so I can almost hear you, “That’s all fine and good, but I can’t think of anything to do”! So, interview your friends at lunch. Ask them, “What do you do for fun?”. Remember past vacations. What were some of the activities that you enjoyed on your last vacation? (You did take a vacation – right?) Can you recreate those activities right here at home? Watch a small child. They’re your best mentor in having fun.

So, Have some FUN! It’s good for you!
