🌟 Transition Thursday 🌟

🎓 Middle School to High School: Course Planning Matters

Under IDEA, transition planning includes developing a course of study that supports a student's future goals. As students move into high school, families should discuss graduation pathways, career interests, college readiness, and career and technical education opportunities. The courses selected in high school can help open doors to future education, training, and employment options.

🚀 The classes students take today can help shape their opportunities tomorrow.

Transition Law: Transition Planning Should Include Community Experiences

Under IDEA, transition services may include community experiences that help students prepare for life after high school. These experiences can include volunteering, visiting colleges, learning to use public transportation, participating in community activities, and exploring career opportunities. Real-world experiences help students develop confidence, independence, and practical skills for adulthood.

🚶 Learning happens both inside and outside the classroom.

📋 Transition Law: Texas Requires Discussion of Transfer of Rights Before Age 18

Texas law requires the ARD Committee to discuss and document the upcoming transfer of educational rights before a student turns 18. Students and families should understand what rights will transfer and what options are available if support with decision-making is needed. Preparing early helps students become active participants in their education and future planning.

🔑 Understanding your rights is an important step toward adulthood.

🎒 Elementary to Middle School: Building Self-Advocacy Skills Early

IDEA recognizes the importance of helping students develop self-advocacy skills as they progress through school. As students prepare to move from elementary school to middle school, the IEP team can help them learn how to ask for help, understand their accommodations, and participate in discussions about their learning needs. These skills help students become more independent and confident as school expectations increase.

🌱 Today's self-advocacy skills become tomorrow's independence.
