Shoutout to Blanca Beltran-Robinson, one of the volunteers who has helped make HAHMP what it is today.

Blanca volunteered with HAHMP for several years while she was a student at the University of Houston, and she says the experience was invaluable — giving her mentorship, meaningful relationships, and connections that helped shape her growth in the industry.

Since then, she’s built an incredible career in media and storytelling, including 18 years at ABC13, work with HTV, and now serving as EP and host of Barrio Kids Network.

We’re so grateful for volunteers like Blanca — and as we gear up for our 2026 Sylvan Rodriguez Scholarship Gala, we’d love to welcome more volunteers.

From HAHMP scholar to breaking news intern, Kathleen Ortiz is building an exciting future in journalism. 👏🏼📰

A 2024 HAHMP Scholarship Recipient, Kathleen graduated from Rice University in May 2026 with a degree in Social Policy Analysis and Sport Management. She is currently working as a breaking news intern at the Houston Chronicle as she continues growing her career in journalism.

Kathleen shared that this scholarship helped her so much with her education and in continuing her path in journalism. She is deeply grateful for HAHMP and says she would not be where she is today without this organization.

Stories like Kathleen’s are a reminder of why HAHMP’s mission matters — supporting students, creating opportunity, and helping the next generation grow into the future of media.

to 2012 and HAHMP’s 26th Annual Sylvan Rodriguez Scholarship Gala, when we awarded 10 Houston students with $3,500 scholarships to help launch their journeys in media and journalism.

As we celebrate 40 years and build toward our 2026 gala, this is the work that continues to move HAHMP forward — creating opportunity and investing in the next generation.
