Proud to have once again supported the Texas Bar Foundation at its annual dinner in Houston this past Friday. The Foundation is the largest charitably funded bar foundation in the nation, advancing justice in Texas through grants for legal aid, ethics, legal research, and the rule of law.

We were especially proud to cheer on Hon. David Gunn, a former firm partner, as he received the 2026 Outstanding Law Review Article Award for his article, "The Original Meaning of the Texas Harmless Error Rule's Second Prong," published in the South Texas Law Review. Justice Gunn joined the First Court of Appeals in October 2024 after more than two decades of appellate practice at Beck Redden, and it was a privilege to watch him be honored.

It was a wonderful evening with great colleagues and a chance to support an organization that has awarded millions in grants to charitable organizations across Texas, all while celebrating Justice Gunn as he was honored for this distinguished achievement.

We are excited to announce that Larry Liu has joined the Firm today as an Associate!

Before joining Beck Redden, Larry practiced at a prominent Texas-based litigation boutique. He also served as a law clerk to the Honorable Kevin C. Newsom of the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit.

Larry graduated from Stanford Law School, where he served as an editor of the Stanford Law Review and earned the Judge Thelton E. Henderson Prize for his contributions to the Stanford Environmental Law Clinic. Before attending law school, Larry worked as a chemical engineer for an oil and gas supermajor in Baytown, Texas. He graduated summa cm laude from Auburn University with dual degrees in Chemical Engineering and Economics.

Nicholas Bruno presented to the Houston Bar Association's Appellate Practice Section yesterday.

In "A Conversation Regarding Mandamus," Nick joined Justice Andrew Johnson of the First Court of Appeals for a discussion on one of appellate practice's most demanding tools.

The conversation covered:
- Recent trends shaping mandamus practice, including petition statistics from the First Court of Appeals
- Notable cases such as In re Bell Helicopter Services and In re ExxonMobil Corp.
- Practical tips for preparing and filing mandamus papers, from record preparation to requests for temporary relief

Mandamus remains an extraordinary writ, and sessions like this give practitioners a clearer view of when and how to pursue it effectively.

Beck Redden hosted a great attorney summer roundtable session today on working with expert witnesses led by partner Fields Alexander. Our attorneys and summer associates gathered together over lunch to focus on a critical component of effective litigation strategy.

Session highlights included:
· Identifying and vetting qualified expert witnesses across industries
· Preparing experts for deposition and trial testimony
· Strategies for presenting expert testimony effectively to judges and juries

We are proud to announce that associate Maryam Ghaffar has been named the 2026 recipient of the Alistair B. Dawson Outstanding Young Litigator Award, presented by the Litigation Section of the State Bar of Texas. The award has been renamed in honor of our late partner and friend, Alistair Dawson.

This recognition underscores Maryam’s skill as a trial lawyer, her dedication to clients, and her contributions to the legal community.

We are excited to announce that Josianne Alwardi has joined the Firm today as a Summer Associate!

Josianne is a rising 3L at The University of Texas School of Law. She’ll spend her final year working as a Notes Editor with the Texas Law Review, competing in mock trial, and serving as the Chair of the Board of Advocates. A proud double Longhorn, Josianne studied International Relations and Plan II Honors at The University of Texas at Austin and minored in Philosophy and Arabic. Josianne is a huge soccer fan and can’t wait for the World Cup to begin. When she’s not cheering on her favorite soccer teams, she’s trying new foods, traveling to new places, or brushing up on world news.
