Old Crow and Pretty Medicine Pipe. Photo taken 1873.
ROARING TWENTIES in rural Montana. In 1928, Helen Meisel, looking cosmopolitan in high heels and a short skirt, and Bob Pewitt posed in front of Jake Hog Farm, midway between Malta and Zortman. The two had come from Chicago to visit Joe Hartmann on his homestead. Hartman had likely picked them up at the Great Northern depot in Malta. Bob Pewitt married Joeโs sister, Katherine, and stayed in the area. I have no information on Helen Meisel.
The carboard box at the right had held jars of pickled pigs feet. The sign for Old Gold ci******es proclaimed: โNot a cough in a carload.โ Text and digital sharpening of photo by Gary Coffrin.

GOING TO THE SUN Highway was dedicated on July 15, 1933. T.J. Hileman photographed the first tour buses to cross the full length of the twisting, 51-mile (82-km) road. In view was Logan Pass, which can have up to 80 feet (24 m) of snowpack. The unpaved, crushed-rock road spanned the entire width of Glacier National Park, and took 20 years to complete. The Montana road remained unpaved until 1952.
Hileman, a Kalispel (Montana) photographer, undoubtably shot on a tripod with a camera that used large sheets of film, perhaps 8x10 inches. The negative was probably retouched to add contrast to the snow. Faces were all in sharp focus. (If at a PC, click image to enlarge/clarify.) Hileman gained fame for his stunning views of Glacier National Park and Montanaโs Blackfeet natives. Text and small-file Photoshop restoration of image by Gary Coffrin.
