"Search for the truth. Indian values teach the holistic approach to the use of technology for mankind's good." --Al Qoyawayma, HOPIโ The Great Spirit had given us certain values to live by. If we learn to think in harmony with these values such as respect, love, patience, tolerance, commitment, trust, etc., we cannot get off track. No matter what we do, we will always be in harmony. For example, if we are respectful, then we will respect the earth, our children, our women, our men and ourselves. Indian values help us walk under the guidance of the Great Spirit. My Creator, today I search for the truth, Your truth. Please let me see it.

Bill Codyโs production traveled with up to 600 people, 400 horses, and 20 buffalo. Codyโs extravaganza was seen in America, England, and Europe by 70 million people!
Whirling Horse had plucked his eyebrows and lashes, common practice among warriors on the Northern Plains. At age 37, Gertrude Kรคsebier attended art school. At age 43, she decided to learn photography. By age 48 in 1900, she had earned a strong reputation for her portraits. Text and Photoshop cleaning and sharpening by Gary Coffrin.
= Backstory & Analysis =
Whirling Horseโs biographical details are scarce, but he later married Josie, a former wife of Sioux Chief American Horse. The four longest tailfeathers of several eagles were used in making the impressive headdress.
Authors often compare Gertrude Kรคsebierโs portraits of Natives with those of Edward S. Curtis. Curtis, however, spent 23 years producing his monumental 20-volume work, โThe North American Indian,โ which contained 1,500 photographs and tribal histories. Kรคsebier took her photos of Natives during a few days. In an unfair tactic, essays comparing them typically offered high praise for a select few of Kรคsebierโs portraits and attacked a select few by Curtis. I see their work as quite similar during their brief period of overlap. However, Curtis faced the challenges of making portraits in the field rather than a studio. Kรคsebier did mostly close head and shoulder shots, a technique not neglected by Curtis.
Kรคsebierโs later portraits were often more creative, particularly when photographing lone women and mothers with their children. In traditional photography, there is only ONE original, the negative, from which many prints can be made. Negatives have greater tonal range and have the full detail of the capture. Many of Kรคsebierโs negatives have survived. Most of Curtis's negatives were destroyed. Curtisโs reputation largely rests on the skills of his backroom staff, who produced superb prints. You can view many Curtis and Kรคsebier images at the Library of Congress website.
Directly comparable to Kรคsebierโs work of the same year, Frank Rinehart and Adolph Muhr photographed 500+ Natives at the 1898 Indian Congress in Omaha. They used simple backdrops, avoided exaggerated poses, and featured many head and shoulder shots. Starting in 1879, Montana lensman L.A. Huffman captured stunningly candid and relaxed portraits of Native men and women, both in the field and in the studio. Kรคsebierโs portraits of Natives were technically excellent, but that level of excellence was at least equaled by several others, including some frontier photographers.
Books have been published on Gertrude Kรคsebier and the other photographers mentioned. Your library can likely obtain volumes from interlibrary loan services if none are available locally.

My favorite documentarians of cowboy life are:
1) L.A. Huffman, who began photographing in Montana during 1879. He had the instincts of a photojournalists, taking action shots of men, horses, and cattle in motion. He made the USAโs first photograph of a cowboy in midair after getting bucked off a horse. Huffman made this capture on the open range! The next capture was 12+ years later, by Ralph R. Doubleday inside a rodeo arena.
2) Erwin E. Smith, who started photographing Texas cowboy life in 1907. He made about 2,000 captures of all aspects of the cattle industry. Itโs worth noting that he purchased photographs from Huffman and Montanaโs Evelyn Cameron.
3) Charles Belden, who in 1921 began photographing on Wyomingโs Pitchfork. Belden did more staging of his scenes, creating wonderfully artful compositions.
I also have huge respect for lensmen who photographed early rodeos. M.B โDocโ Marcell and Ralph R. Doubleday both photographed the Miles City (Montana) Round-up and other rodeos during the 1910s, regularly making spectacular captures.
The 4x5-inch glass plate negative for the Beldon photo is held by the University of Wyoming. I used Photoshop to do 75 minutes of cleaning (spotting), but did not alter much else. It's not impossible that Belden himself did lots of retouching on the negative. He might even have made a tracing on the emulsion side of a copy negative. Click image to enlarge/clarify.

Birmingham was born in San Antonio, Texas. His family moved frequently during his childhood, due to his father's career in the military. He learned to play the guitar at an early age and considers music his "first love". After obtaining a Bachelor of Science from the University of Southern California, he worked as a petrochemical engineer before becoming an actor. In the early 1980s, a talent scout spotted Birmingham at a local gym, where he had been bodybuilding and entering bodybuilding contests. This led to his first acting experience, in a music video for Diana Ross, for her 1982 hit song "Muscles". After appearing in Ross' music video, Birmingham began to pursue acting as his primary career. He studied acting with Larry Moss and Charles Conrad. In 1986, Birmingham made his television debut on an episode of the series Riptide. By 2002, he had a recurring role as the character Oz in the medical drama Body & Soul, starring Peter Strauss. In 2005, he was cast as the older Dogstar in the Steven Spielberg six-part miniseries Into the West. He recently played a Texas ranger a ranger, in Hell or High Water, opposite Jeff Bridges.

Perception can be very wise but reading between the lines in other people's lives is only guesswork. By rationalizing and putting two and two together it can almost be assumed that something is a certain way, right? Wrong. People identify with other people because of their likenesses - but there is nothing new under the sun. Human nature is human nature and will stay that way until we all stand close enough to the divine. We are ever so much better served not to guess about other people. And we are better people when we mind our own business. ~ The Apache was unlike any other Indian Tribe the whites have ever fought....He saw no reason for fighting unless there was something tangible and immediate to be gained. ~
