We got one of those messages today that makes you stop what you’re doing and just smile.
Plumbers Local Union 68's Community
Improvement Committee had the privilege of helping sponsor the Brownsville ISD GreenpowerUSA race teams this season.
And let me tell you, these kids showed the whole country what Brownsville is made of.
More than 150 teams from across the nation showed up to the 2026 National Finals in Talladega, Alabama. These students were not just there to participate. They were there to compete.
The #48 middle school girls team was sitting in 1st place with only 20 minutes left when their right front tire blew.
That could have been the end of it.
Instead, those girls got in the garage, went to work, fixed the car in six minutes, got back on the track, and still finished 3rd in the nation.
Six minutes.
Most adults would still be arguing over who lost the wrench. Ha.
Their high school team also made its first trip to Nationals and walked away with a top 20 finish against programs that have been doing this for years.
That is not luck.
That is preparation, teamwork, and heart.
One part of the message we received really stuck with us. Young girls were pointing at the all-girls team, saying how cool they were. Parents were pointing at those racers and telling their daughters, “You can do that too.”
That right there is bigger than racing.
That is why support matters.
That is why we believe in programs like this.

Thanks to Jorge Jasso, Oliveira Middle School, Brownsville ISD, the coaches, parents, and every student who poured their heart into this season, we are proud of you.
You represented Brownsville.
You represented Texas.
And you reminded all of us what happens when young people are given a chance and a community stands behind them.

Today, we take a moment to remember the brave men and women who gave everything for this country.

Memorial Day is more than just a holiday. It’s about sacrifice. It’s about courage. It’s about families whose lives were changed forever so the rest of us could enjoy the freedoms we often take for granted.

At Plumbers Local 68, we proudly honor the service members who never made it home, including veterans, union brothers, family members, and loved ones connected to our Local who answered the call to serve something bigger than themselves.

Their sacrifice is the reason we get to gather with our families, go to work, chase our dreams, and live freely. That’s not something we should ever forget.

Today, we remember them. We honor them. And we hold deep gratitude for the price they paid.
