Standing in front of the ยกPuro Ritmo! pop-up exhibition felt surreal especially being asked to share my experience and thoughts about music and culture.
As far back as I can remember, music and dance have always been part of my life.
From playing in a conjunto band and performing at gigs all over Houston, to later dancing Salsa ๐๐ป โ music and so many genres have been the playlist of my life.
Seeing our music, culture, and stories recognized in spaces like this is powerful.

This week marks the anniversary of when the world announced a global pandemic and the City of Houston capped large gatherings. It forced us to cancel the Texas Salsa Congress after a year of preparation.
The grief was real. Watching something we worked so hard for disappear while the world turned upside down was heartbreaking.
But the pause gave us time to reflect. When people began craving connection again, TSC returned with clarity and purpose to create events rooted in music, dance, and community across generations. ๐ค๐ผ๐ซถ๐ผ
We came back stronger, lifted by a community, artists, and organizations who continue to inspire what we create next.๐จ๐๐ป๐ต๐ง๐ธ
Trust the process. Sometimes letting go of comfort is what allows you to grow in ways you never imagined. โค๏ธ๐๐ป

Did you know the Puro Ritmo exhibition is coming in April 2026 from the National Museum of the American Latino of the Smithsonian Institution?
This weekend Houston hosted a pop-up where I had the chance to learn more about the exhibition and was even invited to teach a salsa class. ๐๐ป
Seeing salsa recognized and documented in museum spaces is powerful. Our music, our stories, and our dance deserve to be preserved and shared with future generations.
Honored to keep the rhythm going. ๐๐ป It was a privilege and truly a pinch me moment. And aligned with upcoming future programming for the Texas Salsa Congress.

Salsa has taken me into rooms I never imagined would hold space for me. As a kid, visiting the Theater District on a school field trip opened my eyes to what the arts could be, especially growing up in the inner city. Teaching a Salsa ๐๐ป class at the before โIn the Heightsโ will forever be a core memory.
Sharing the the behind the scenes of that experience soon!
