Third Space Music
Third Space Music is a non-profit partnership between musicians from the Houston Symphony and the Houston community. Our motto is Connect, Create, Contribute.
The “third space” is a place which is not home and not work. It is a non-hierarchical place where people come willingly to build community in a casual and conversational environment. Our mission is to support live classical music in Houston, connect Houston Symphony musicians directly to our audience, and contribute to Houston-area non-profit organizations. Brinton shared these words ahead of Sunday’s Steinway Charity Concert:
“Written to mourn the death of his close friend and mentor, the great Russian pianist Nikolai Rubinstein, Tchaikovsky’s piano trio is perhaps the height of romantic intensity and passion. Once we had Yoonshin and Evelyn confirmed for this charity concert, my thoughts immediately went to this trio as the perfect music for players of such virtuosic intensity. It is wonderful, beautiful music of the most intense emotion and I believe my colleagues are going to make this a very special and memorable performance. We look forward to seeing you Sunday!”

Hear Maki and friends perform the Brahms on the second half of Sunday’s concert! Read below for his words on the piece:
“A “Pocket Symphony” - Brahms’ String Quintet No. 2 was born from the sketches of a potential fifth symphony. Its broad, sweeping gestures and intricate, cross woven textures show that despite scaling down to five players, Brahms still painted with the aural palette of brass, woodwinds and full strings in mind.”

Rehearsal is underway for concert number three! Read what Amy had to say about Golijov’s string nonet:
Oswaldo Golijov wrote The Last Round as a tribute to Astor Piazzolla and his contribution to revolutionizing the traditional tango. The title references a short story by Julio Cortázar about boxing. Golijov merges the idea of a boxing match and a tango dance with the configuration of the ensemble: two string quartets battling against and dancing with each other, separated by the double bass in the center.
