Tom Phillips is one of few people to both sit at the top of a state court system and win cases in front of it.

During a recent Houston Bar Association Energy Section event, sponsored by Baker Botts, Phillips reflected on his career, with firm partner Bill Kroger moderating the conversation.

Phillips served as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Texas from 1988 to 2004, winning four statewide elections after his initial appointment. He began as a Baker Botts trial lawyer, served as a Harris County district judge, and since 2005 has argued appeals in state and federal courts, including matters before the court he once led. Phillips is consistently recognized by Chambers USA and Best Lawyers in America.

Baker Botts hosted its annual Subsea Networks Dinner in London last week, gathering more than 60 leaders from across the global subsea cables sector for an evening at Frederick's in Islington.

Held alongside the Submarine Networks EMEA conference, the dinner brought together the operators, investors, contractors, hyperscalers, and advisers who build and finance the networks carrying nearly all the world's data traffic. The firm’s Digital Infrastructure team advises clients across the full subsea lifecycle, from joint build and consortium formation, cable system procurement and development to financing, regulatory navigation, and system commercialization.

Thank you to everyone who joined us! The room reflected the people moving this sector forward, and Baker Botts looks forward to continuing the conversation.

Baker Botts secured a win on summary judgment for Ribbon Communications in New York, following a long-running dispute tied to Charter’s VoIP patent litigation with Sprint and their $220 million global settlement.

The court dismissed Charter’s claims seeking more than $150 million in indemnity, rejecting Charter’s effort to recover settlement payments and defense costs under a supply agreement. The ruling follows a parallel Delaware win, affirmed in December 2025, where the Delaware trial court also granted summary judgment for Ribbon in related litigation regarding separate supply agreements.

Baker Botts represented Transmission Developers, Inc., a Blackstone portfolio company, on the development and commercial operation of the Champlain Hudson Power Express, a $6 billion transmission project now delivering 1,250 megawatts of carbon-free hydropower from Québec to New York City.

The 339-mile line is the longest buried transmission line in North America, running underground and underwater from the U.S.-Canada border to a converter station in Queens. It can supply up to 20% of New York City's power needs.

Baker Botts has represented TDI on the project since 2013. The firm led federal regulatory strategy before FERC, the New York ISO, the Department of Energy, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and advised on the long-term capacity contract with Hydro-Québec, along with real estate, land use, and interconnection agreements.

Baker Botts was proud to support the NACD Northern California Directorship 100 celebration at the Stanford Faculty Club, honoring this year's honorees and alumni.

Partners Brian Lee and Friedemann Thomma and Chief Client Office Catherine Zinn represented the firm for an evening centered on board leadership, governance, and the kind of peer connection.

We were especially pleased to celebrate our friend Brian Martin, CLO of Nutanix, on his well-deserved recognition as a 2025 Directorship 100 honoree.

The NACD Northern California director community continues to set a high bar for thoughtful, engaged governance leadership. Congratulations to all of this year's honorees.

Baker Botts was thrilled to host the Lex Mundi Intellectual Property Practice Group Meeting at INTA at our London office this past week, a great opportunity for meaningful IP conversations with colleagues from around the world.

Thank you to Neil Coulson and Suzi Hengl for leading the conversation.

We also appreciated hearing from keynote speaker Annie Haselfeld of Harley-Davidson, who shared a thoughtful in-house perspective, and from Lex Mundi CEO Helena Samaha, who joined us and spoke to a standing room-only crowd as well.

INTA continues to be a vital space for the global IP community to connect, and we're glad to play a part in those conversations.
