If you’ve ever stopped by the bakery or taken a peek at my desk, you might have noticed a framed photograph resting on my workspace. It’s an old picture of my Dad and me from my childhood. It stays there for a reason. Out of everyone in my life, Dad was the absolute biggest supporter of my baking dreams. He believed in what I could do long before the mixers were spinning or a customer walked through the door. Daddy taught me lessons in hard work, consistency and perfection. As a former amateur boxer he believed in accuracy.

There is a bittersweet piece of this journey that I carry with me every day: he never got to see this dream fully realized in the physical world. Dad passed away just seven months before I discovered the storefront that would become Chic Sweets Bakery. It felt like a heartbreaking twist of timing, but in my heart, I don’t believe he missed it at all. In some beautiful, quiet way, I know he can see me. I feel his presence in every successful bake, every early morning, and every milestone reached.

This time of year always brings him to the forefront of my mind. Some years, Father’s Day and his birthday happened to fall on the exact same day, making it a double celebration of the man he was.

Daddy was never a fan of overly sweet pastries. He appreciated the simple, perfectly executed classics. In fact, the very last cake I ever got to bake for his birthday was a traditional pound cake. I never had the chance to make him my signature teacakes, but knowing his taste, I am absolutely certain he would have loved them—with that perfect contrast of a fluffy center and a crisp exterior.

So, this next weekend, in honor of my Dad, Rev. Charles C. Davis, I am turning on the ovens to bake a special tribute. The bakery will be filled with the comforting aromas of classic pound cake and our signature teacakes, crafted with all the love and gratitude I carry for him.

To everyone celebrating a father, remembering a father, or carrying the spirit of a guiding light who has passed on, may your weekend be filled with warmth, sweet memories, and the comfort of knowing that true love never really leaves us.
