Meet Chuy, a little Easter miracle! 🐣 Found on Easter Day after being hit by a car, this tiny kitten’s future was uncertain. Kind individuals stepped in to help but needed our support to cover his medical care.
Chuy had a broken leg that required surgery, but his rescuers made a heartwarming promise: if we could help save him, they would give him a forever home. Today, Chuy has blossomed into a beautiful, healthy cat. He’s now headed to our Fixit program to be neutered and microchipped, ensuring he stays safe and healthy with his loving family for years to come.
Stories like Chuy’s remind us that when people are given the right resources, they will step up to care for their pets. It is our mission to keep pets and familias together! Thank you for making these second chances possible through your continued support.
We appreciate your support for more success stories like Chuy’s, if you would like to donate, you can give below or at: https://barriodogs.org/donate/

We had a super time at the Supergirl pop-up event at Zoomie's Dog Park! 🐾
Special shoutout to Ramy, owner of Zoomie's Dog Park for inviting us and for sharing our mission: local pets need local homes. We brought out two special rescues, Palmer and Benson, who are both looking for their forever families.

Today was our final opportunity to provide public remarks before the City Council budget is passed. Several individuals and advocacy groups gathered to support the BARC budget while ensuring the Mayor and City Council members understand the true magnitude of our city’s stray animal crisis. We emphasized that change is long overdue to ensure the safety of everyone in our community. We are committed, we care, and we truly hope our elected officials take our remarks to heart.
We had excellent presentations from Barrio Dogs, East End Communities, SERJobs, East End Kitties, and Fit Houston. Together, we can do more!

Yikes, it looks like summer temperatures have finally arrived and will stick around for the next few months. We think this is a good time to talk about keeping our pets cool during the hot summer months. We've updated our info flyers; please help us spread the word! Too many people are unaware of the dangers of the summer heat on their pets.

This week's Monday Spotlight is on Mich Martinez, our talented and creative videographer/storyteller! 🎥✨
Mich’s videos have elevated our social media channels, allowing us to share the heart of Barrio Dogs' mission in ways words alone cannot. We are grateful to have his vision and talent on our team. Here's Mich's story:👇
"My passion for community has always been a driving force in my life. Since 2023, I’ve had the opportunity to work with Barrio Dogs and witness firsthand the incredible impact we make for both animals and people in Houston.
As a resident of the East End for nearly ten years, I care deeply about this neighborhood and want to do what I can to help it grow, thrive, and remain a place where, family, compassion and community come first.
Dogs hold a special place in my heart. My mother and I adopted two street dogs in Mexico, and that experience changed the way I see animal welfare. For me, this isn’t just work, this is part of a lifelong path of caring for those who cannot speak for themselves.
Barrio Dogs embodies the values I believe in: community, compassion, education, and action. I’m honored to be part of a mission that helps animals while strengthening the neighborhood I call home."

Let’s show up and speak up for those who can’t! 🐾
Glad to see that the Houston Chronicle editorial board agrees on the urgent need for more funding at BARC and presents some options on how to make it happen. While this year's budget process is nearly wrapped up, this fight isn’t over; we’ll be back next year. Ultimately, we won't fix this crisis until we get a demonstrable, long-term commitment from the city. 🐾

Everyone needs a friend like Kirby!
After being rescued from traffic near Kirby & 610, Kirby is now safely settled with a foster and is eagerly waiting to find his forever home. He has been fully vetted, neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped. He still sports his signature big smile and remains a really good boy with a gentle soul who is ready to bring love to his new family.
While direct rescue is not Barrio Dogs' primary mission, we believe everyone has a role to play in addressing the crisis of homeless dogs on our streets. When a neighbor steps up to save a life, we feel it is vital to do our part and "chip in" to ensure the animal gets the care they need.
If you are interested in adopting Kirby please contact us at [email protected]. If you’d like to contribute to his ongoing care, please visit https://barriodogs.org/donate/.

📢 At today's Houston City Council meeting, Gloria Zenteno spoke about the FY27 city budget, highlighting the ongoing underfunding of BARC compared to animal services departments in other major Texas cities. She also noted that, despite limited resources, the USPS reported that postal worker dog bites in Houston have declined, an encouraging outcome that reflects BARC's efforts and community partnerships.
Big thanks to Council Member Sallie Alcorn for the positive feedback and for her ongoing support for Houston's animals! 🏛️💙🐾
