When steel corrodes, the resulting corrosion products can occupy significantly more volume than the original metal.
That becomes a serious problem when the steel is embedded inside concrete. As reinforcing steel corrodes, the expanding corrosion products create pressure against the surrounding concrete. Over time, that internal pressure can cause cracking, delamination, and spalling, where sections of concrete loosen or break away.
Once cracks form, they can also provide easier pathways for moisture, oxygen, chlorides, and other corrosive agents to reach the reinforcing steel, potentially accelerating deterioration.
It is a reminder that corrosion does not need to be visible to be causing damage. What starts beneath the surface can eventually affect the durability, integrity, and service life of an entire structure.

A coating failure does not stop at the steel.
For railcars carrying liquid or dry-bulk commodities, internal coating and lining decisions can involve corrosion protection, substrate compatibility, surface preparation, application, inspection, and product contamination concerns.
