On Juneteenth, we honor the long journey toward freedom and the courage of those who held fast to their humanity in the face of injustice.
At Compassionate Houston, we believe that equality, respect, and kindness are not abstract ideals โ they are daily practices that help us build a city where every person is seen, valued, and free.
Today, we pause with gratitude, humility, and resolve.

A small act of compassion can spark something much bigger.
Several months ago, a Deer Park neighbor offered a simple meal and a bottle of water to someone in need โ and that moment of kindness grew into Vann's Posse (check out their FB page), a volunteer network of more than 1,000 people now supporting unhoused neighbors across the Houston area. Their team distributes meals, warm clothing, hygiene kits, and other essentials, showing how one generous act can ripple outward into a community of care.
Stories like this remind us that compassion is contagious โ and that everyday kindness has the power to transform lives.

An Epidemic for Kindness Reminder
"That is the paradox of the epidemic: that in order to create the contagious movement, you often have to create many small movements first."

Next Friday, our friends at the Rothko Chapel will be hosting a (FREE!) dialogue and book talk on Juneteenth. As the Office of Commissioner Rodney Ellis plans to debut a new public memorial space, we explore how places of remembrance can move beyond grief and become sites of community gathering, dialogue, and democracy.
