People keep saying things like:
“They can go to the food banks.”
“They should just get a job.”
“They should’ve saved like we did.”
“It’s not my responsibility to make sure they eat.”
Let’s be honest — that sounds good until you actually look at what’s happening.
Starting November 1, 42 million Americans could lose their food stamps (SNAP).
That’s not gossip — that’s federal data.
Right now, 13.5% of U.S. households — about 18 million families — already struggle to put food on the table.
That’s before the cuts....
And according to Feeding America, 47 million people, including 14 million children, were food insecure last year. .
Now think about that for a second.
If all those people suddenly lose their benefits, where do they go?
Straight to food banks and churches — the same ones that are already stretched thin..
But food banks don’t make food. They rely on donations from grocery stores and suppliers — and those stores don’t have bottomless shelves...
When they run out, the donations stop....
When the donations stop, the food banks go empty...
And when people are hungry, it doesn’t stay “their problem” for long...
Prices rise.
Theft goes up.
Desperation spreads.
Communities start to fall apart..
So when someone says, “They should just get a job,” remember this:
Most folks on food assistance already work...
They’re the people bagging groceries, cleaning buildings, delivering packages, caring for the elderly — jobs that barely pay enough to survive, let alone save...
This isn’t just about one city, one country, or one group.
Globally, more than 231 million people are facing extreme hunger this year — while the funding to feed them is being cut by nearly half..
You don’t have to like the system. You don’t even have to agree with how it’s run...
But pretending hunger is a personal failure instead of a societal collapse — that’s how whole communities go under...
So before you say, “They can just go to the food bank,” remember — when that last can’s gone, we’re all in the same line...
