Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, immediate past Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University (LASU), has said public universities across Nigeria may need to charge at least ₦1 million in tuition per student to achieve financial self-sustainability.

Olatunji-Bello made the remarks in a recent interview while reflecting on her five-year tenure, which ended on Saturday.

She said LASU currently spends over ₦1 billion monthly on its payroll, while its ₦13 billion internally generated revenue (IGR) is insufficient to cover salaries.

“Universities can achieve financial self-sustainability. If they can innovate and ensure improvements in the institution, money will come in,” she said.

“But then, if the money comes in, how do you spend it???? Right now, LASU does not have financial self-sustainability.

“We may have increased our dedicated revenue, but we cannot survive. Our payroll right now is over N1bn per month. All the N13bn IGR does not cover our salaries.”

She added, “So, universities that want to attain self-sustainability will have to increase school fees into millions.”

According to her, while some secondary schools charge over ₦1 million per term, some public universities still charge around ₦100,000 yearly, which she said is unsustainable.

“So, any public university that wants to sustain financial independence will have to charge school fees of not less than N1 million per student,” she said.

Olatunji-Bello also stated that “good quality education needs money” and urged parents to prioritise their children’s education.

Her comments came shortly after Education Minister Tunji Alausa urged public universities to diversify their funding, saying government resources alone cannot sustain tertiary institutions.

A 34-year-old Ghanaian beautician, Jessica Hartog, has been arraigned before the High Court in Accra over her involvement in the exportation of approximately four tonnes of suspected n+roctics from Ghana to France.

Hartog, who owns Euros Spa in East Legon, is one of four suspects facing charges in connection with the shipment.

The others are businessman Desmond Koranteng Curiel, also known as Paul Kweku Yeboah or Biggs Musah Attah, aka Kromo and Kweku Otchere.

The case came to light after French authorities intercepted a 40 foot container at Dunkirk in September 2026.

The container, shipped from Ghana, was declared to contain plastic waste, but prohibited substances were discovered concealed inside.

The shipment is estimated to have a street value of about US$260 million.

Following the interception, Ghana’s Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) launched an investigation into individuals linked to the consignment.

Hartog and Curiel were arrested by NACOC officers at Ashaley Botwe on September 12, while Otchere was apprehended at his East Legon residence the same day.

Prosecutors told the court that Attah later turned himself in at NACOC headquarters on September 14.

Searches conducted in connection with the arrests led to the recovery of three f+rearms, ammunition, four luxury vehicles, passports and various sums of money.

Hartog, identified in court as Curiel’s fiancée, told investigators that she was unaware of the nature or specifics of his business dealings.

All four accused persons pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The High Court subsequently remanded them into lawful custody pending further proceedings, with the case adjourned until October 13, 2026.

A fifth suspect, Dutch national Jos Leijdekkers, also known as Bolle Jos, is reportedly still at large.

The National Leader of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Senator Seriake Dickson, has criticised the activities of the OK Movement, warning political support groups affiliated with the party against operating as parallel structures or competing with it for control.

Dickson spoke while receiving former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal, into the NDC.

“Support groups don’t compete with the political party that is sponsoring candidates. Support groups don’t compete for supremacy, for space. Support groups are what they are: support groups.”

He added, “Support groups don’t play the role of a political party. They don’t sponsor candidates. They provide grassroots support, mobilisation, and support. They don’t convert themselves to become critics of the political party sponsored.”

Dickson said the NDC has made room for support groups, noting, “The NDC from day one made it clear that we have a huge place, an important place for all support groups. I’ve actually held meetings with Obidient groups.”

He stressed that several groups could operate under the party, saying, “We have thousands of support groups, and many more are welcome.”

He added that the party has a department responsible for coordinating and managing them.

According to Dickson, support groups should not attack their sponsoring party or establish competing campaign structures.

“They don’t attack the political party sponsor. They don’t do that. Never in the history of political election, everywhere in the world.”

He said, “None of them will dare say they are setting up a campaign, presidential campaign council. It’s unheard of. Nonsensical.”

Dickson said support groups could be “gentle” or “more active,” but remained support groups, adding that their role was to mobilise at the grassroots and promote the party and its candidates.

He urged them to “confine themselves to their role” and focus on “providing support for our candidates, galvanising support at the grassroots level, propagating the candidates and the party.”

A female corrections officer in South Carolina, Matrese Grant, has been fired and arrested after allegedly bringing home-cooked meals into the W. Glenn Campbell Detention Center for inmates.

Grant, who worked as a sergeant and shift supervisor at the Darlington County detention facility, had reportedly been employed there for only four months.

Authorities said she was found bringing unauthorized food into the facility on September 7 and allegedly hid the meals beneath a blanket to avoid security cameras.

She is also accused of placing the food in a secure location where inmates could later retrieve it.

The incident was reported to the Darlington County Sheriff’s Office on September 9, after which Grant was suspended without pay on September 11.

Grant was dismissed following an investigation and arrested on September 17.

She was charged with misconduct in office and furnishing contraband to inmates.

The sheriff’s office said unauthorized food is considered contraband because weapons or other dangerous materials could potentially be concealed inside food.

However, authorities have not accused Grant of putting any we@pon or harmful object in the meals.

After her arrest, Grant was booked into the same detention centre where she had worked and supervised inmates. She was later granted a $15,000 cash or surety bond covering both charges.

The allegations against Grant have not been tested in court.
