Did you know commercial electricity rates in Texas averaged 8.69¢/kWh in March 2026, while in Massachusetts they were 25.09¢/kWh (Source: EIA)? That is nearly three times as much, but why?

Three main factors drive the difference.

Fuel mix matters. Texas benefits from abundant in-state natural gas production and a highly competitive grid. New England states rely heavily on imported natural gas through constrained pipelines, which drives costs significantly higher.

So does grid infrastructure. The Northeast has some of the oldest transmission and distribution systems in the country, and the cost of modernizing that grid gets passed directly to ratepayers.

And demand is outpacing generation. PJM's forecasted peak load for 2026/2027 increased more than 5,400 MW year over year, driven largely by data center expansion. When demand grows faster than new generation, capacity costs rise and show up on business electric bills.

What does your business pay compared to your state's average?

If your electric bill went up this month and nothing changed about how you use energy, PJM capacity costs are likely the reason.

PJM manages the electric grid across Illinois, Maryland, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Washington DC. Each year, an auction determines what it costs to keep enough power available to meet peak demand. Those costs get passed directly to businesses on their electric bills.

The 2026/2027 auction cleared at 22% higher than the prior year and the increases took effect June 1. In Pennsylvania, commercial customers with Penelec and West Penn Power saw increases of 6.3% and 7.2% respectively while Met-Ed and Penn Power commercial rates remained roughly the same.

Businesses on fixed-rate supply contracts are protected. Businesses on expired or variable-rate contracts could be absorbing the full impact.

If you are not sure where your contract stands, now is the time to find out.

The barrier to EV charging for most businesses isn't interest. It's capital.

VIA Energy Solutions deployed 16 EV charging plugs at The Raye Luxury Apartments in Shaker Heights, Ohio at zero upfront cost. No equipment purchase. No installation bill. No maintenance contract. The full program was funded through their electricity and natural gas supply contracts.

If your property is in a deregulated energy market, this model may work for you too. See if you qualify.

Summer energy bills are coming. Here are 5 ways to lower your business's electricity costs before they peak.

1. Adjust your thermostat setpoints. Raising cooling temperatures by 2-3 degrees during unoccupied hours can meaningfully cut consumption without affecting comfort during business hours.
2. Stay on top of HVAC maintenance. Dirty coils and clogged filters force your system to work harder, driving up energy use exactly when demand is highest.
3. Shift high-draw equipment to off-peak hours. Scheduling energy-intensive equipment in the early morning or evening reduces demand charges, which tend to spike in summer.
4. Seal air leaks around doors and loading docks. Heat infiltration makes your cooling system work harder than it needs to.
5. Review your energy rate before summer usage kicks in. In deregulated markets, higher summer usage means an uncompetitive rate costs you more. Locking in a favorable rate now protects you when your usage is at its highest.

Which of these is your biggest challenge heading into summer?

Not all EV chargers are the same. And for businesses, choosing the wrong one is an expensive mistake.

The right fit depends on more factors than most people realize: how long customers actually spend on site, your electrical capacity, network features, connector standards, and how you plan to scale.

Every business is different. Reach out to one of our energy experts to find out what's right for your property.

Did you know some businesses qualify for a state sales tax exemption on their energy bills?

If your business uses energy for production, you could qualify, which means stopping that tax going forward and potentially recovering what you have already overpaid.

Businesses that commonly qualify include bakeries, breweries, wineries, machine shops, screen printers, beverage and bottling facilities, and commercial residential properties.

A Predominant Use Study is how you find out.

Electricity. Natural gas. In the right markets, both are negotiable.

According to EIA, wholesale natural gas prices rose 56% in 2025. If your business uses natural gas and you haven't reviewed your contract recently, now is a good time to find out if you can lock in a better rate.

VIA Energy Solutions brokers both electricity and natural gas. One call, one broker, one energy strategy for your business.

Did your energy bill go up but your usage didn't? Your contract may have expired.

When an energy contract expires, businesses either roll to month-to-month or renew at a higher rate. Either way, you're likely no longer on your best deal.

If you're in a deregulated market like TX, PA, MD, MA, NH, or DC, you have the right to shop suppliers and lock in a better rate.
