3/29 Update: Adopted today!!!
This is breaking my heart. Murphy was in a foster home but recently had to come back to the shelter due to a family emergency. She was so happy and vibrant in the home. You can see her pics in other posts — she was smiling. In the shelter she’s shutting down. She’s living in a pop up crate in a room filled with crates of other dogs. She’s a sweet girl, she did well with the Foster’s dogs and was a big cuddle bug. Please help us get Murphy a new foster or home. Not only is she miserable in the shelter but she’s at risk due to the lack of space. She deserves a chance.
Visit today or apply online to meet Murphy
She’s estimated to be 2-3 yrs old. About 50lbs and listed as a APBT.

Share! Let’s get her a home 🥰
As full of hugs and kisses as Mochi is, we’re not sure how she’s spent so long looking for a home. She’s been with us since 4/4/22. Since she’s one of our longest residents she’s on our current PUSH (Pets Urgently Seeking Homes) List.
Mochi is a people dog - hence all the hugs and kisses. She’s so best in a home with just people - no other pets.
She likes to keep active and have some fun! She’d make for a lively date night!!

I love transformation stories
We’re so proud of how our Petunia has bloomed for Transformation Tuesday! Just look at the difference between when she first came in and now (recent photo posted by one of our amazing shelter volunteers Kelly - thanks!).
This Transformation Tuesday is especially important to Petunia because it’s also Valentines Day - they day of love! She’s sure hoping someone will fall in love with her today and take her home. ♥️
Petunia is 2YO and has been in shelter since November. Her finder said she got along well with her small dog and wanted to socialize. She’s a cuddle bug and a good listener. Shes good with children and a great fetch player. She’s got a medium energy level, and walks well on a leash.

I love black dogs! They’re my absolute favorite.
What a great marketing push from Austin Animal Center!
- Black Dog Syndrome
Have you heard of Black Dog Syndrome? It's the idea that black dogs are often overlooked in shelters compared to dogs with other coat colors. Some think it may be due to superstitions about black animals, while others think their dark fur hides their playful and fun expressions, thereby masking their personality to the humans walking by or looking at pictures online. Another theory is that people want unique-looking dogs and view black dogs as "generic."
Whatever the reason, several of our overlooked super-longstay dogs have black coats:
🖤 Chessie - 493 days
🖤 Luna Jane - 487 days
🖤 Hopscotch - 342 days
🖤 Pogo - 334 days
🖤 Drogo - 318 days
🖤 Fletcher - 311 days
Adopting a black dog has many benefits: Black fur is much easier to hide on your black dress pants, dirt doesn't show as much on black fur, and since the color black scientifically absorbs heat, black dogs are natural heaters for cold, cuddly days!

I love blog posts from American Pets Alive!. This one in part hits different because we as animal care workers forget about our own mental health. We see things that no one should ever see and deal with situations that no one should have to deal with.
Working in animal welfare can sometimes be a thankless job. Don’t forget to talk about your problems with someone you trust or a professional, and don’t forget to practice self care. 🫶
