While waiting for glue to cure on a rather complicated segmented piece I decided to knock out a quick bowl. This is a 7” by 2” Monkeypod bowl.

My latest segmented project is requiring the smallest segmented rings that I have ever attempted. 48 segments per ring with the edge length of 1/8”. I am having to use a board thickness of 9/16” in order to clamp the segments into rings. The final ring thickness will be 1/8”. Perhaps I can get two vessels from the clamped up rings if I can part them successfully.

Red Oak Burl and epoxy bowl. Measures 5” tall and 8” wide. The wood was full of voids and bark inclusions so I felt the need to fill them with the blue epoxy. This piece is finished with three coats of original Waterlox.

Made this 15.5” fruit bowl for a friend, at his request, from Colombian Monkeypod.

11” x 2.5” Monkeypod salad/fruit bowl. I bought some cutoffs from a local shop that makes and sells live edge tables from Columbian Monkeypod slabs. It is a beautiful wood and fun to turn.

Pecan can be a fairly bland wood and this piece needed some personality once I had it turned. The pith cracks were filled with ground turquoise and a home made imitation turquoise. I dyed the entire exterior black and then sanded most of the black off, this leave black in the most porous grain. After applying a few more colors of water based dye stains the colors were blended with denatured alcohol. Once dry, a tung oil based Danish oil was applied and allowed to soak in and cure then that was set with a sanding sealer. The final finish is several coats of spray lacquer followed by a polish. It finished at 11.5” wide and 5” tall.

It took me a little while but I finally got around to embellishing this piece of mesquite. What do you think?

Mesquite. Measures 5” tall by 9 “ wide. I enlarged the opening by removing some of the sap wood, along the grain. I have plans to embellish this piece further and I’ll pass along pictures once that is completed.

This spalted, Flaming Box Elder, bowl came from a tree that my brother-in-law took down in North Carolina, before it fell on their house. It measures 10” wide by 5” tall. Finished with tung oil and then wax once the oil dried.

Oiled and lacquered, signed and dated on the bottom. This piece is finally finished. Now we have to find a place in the house for it to sit; that may be the hardest part of this project.
