HAPPY JUNETEENTH!

Juneteenth (short for “June Nineteenth”) marks the day when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas in 1865 to take control of the state and ensure that all enslaved people be freed. The troops’ arrival came a full two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth honors the end to slavery in the United States and is considered the longest-running African American holiday.

In 1979, Texas became the FIRST state to make Juneteenth an official holiday; several others followed suit over the years. In June 2021, Congress passed a resolution establishing Juneteenth as a federal holiday.

BCSAVE loves to celebrate all holidays, but as a Texas-based rescue, we definitely love to celebrate the ones our great state of Texas started!

ADOPTION PUP-DATE!!!

Around 2 YO and 50 lbs, Lennox was found as a stray on 3/22 w/ an injury to his left rear leg. We discovered his left rear femoral head was luxated (dislocated), a serious injury where the ball of the thigh bone is forced out of its pelvic socket. Our ortho specialist Animal Hospital inserted a "toggle pin" to hold the top of the femur in place. After several weeks of strict crate rest and one of the most amazing foster homes, he was released from activity restriction and has now found his FURever home!

Coming ALL THE WAY from California(!), Lennox's new mom flew in to the DFW area where Lennox was being fostered. Driving back with her daughter, they kept us apprised of their trip and said of Lennox:

"Lennox is an angel! He has been a perfect road companion...Lennox is proving to be the perfect dog! ... Sara and I are truly in love!"

THIS is why we do what we do. To help a dog get out of the shelter, get healthy and healed, and find him a FURever family - this is our mission. And we couldn't do it without ALL of our volunteers, including fantastic fosters who care for their foster pups as if they were one of their own before letting them go. 🥰

🩹🩹 SHORT TERM MEDICAL FOSTERS NEEDED FOR NUGGET! 🩹🩹

Nugget needs a very special medical foster (or two!). Nugget is our blue merle puppy who was hit by a car several weeks ago and taken to the shelter, and whose tail was completely degloved. The shelter amputated the majority of his tail, and we were able to pull him into a foster home about 2 weeks ago.

We thought Nugget was getting better, but after his last vet visit, we determined that he has THREE different antibiotic-resistant bacteria keeping his tail from healing. It's so serious that if we can't get it under control, the infections could result in no more Nugget. 😭😭😭

We have ONE chance to save Nugget if we can get him seen by a specialty surgeon in Austin to see if we can remove the rest of Nugget's nub and hopefully, the infection with it. BUT we need to get him to Austin (from Copperas Cove) this weekend to hang out until he can be seen by the vet on Monday. IF (and it's a big IF) the vet thinks there is enough healthy tail/ tissue left, we then have to schedule Nugget for a second surgery and pretty intensive follow-up care.

WHAT WE NEED:

🚨PRIORITY 1.🚨 Someone in Austin who can keep Nugget starting Sunday and take him the vet in N. Austin on Monday. THEN...

🚨PRIORITY 2.🚨 If Nugget can have surgery, someone who can
a) Keep other pets from getting the infection (a pet free home or one where you can keep Nugget separated would work good)
b) Take Nugget back for regular visits to the vet
c) Possibly do things like keeping the tail clean, maybe bandage changes, and maybe topical/ oral meds.

It's a big ask - we know. But we want to give Nugget every chance to make it through this and the only way we can do it is with some help.

ARE YOU LOOKING FOR A DOG THAT LIVES TO BE IN YOUR LAP AND PLAY WITH YOU AND YOUR OTHER PUP(S)?!?!

Then Kumba is the guy for you! A recent save from a local shelter partner, Kumba was adopted around 3 months, then returned for jumping on kids. Now around a year old and 50 lbs., we've found Kumba to be a lovable, dog/kid/people-friendly pup who loves water and is cat-neutral (so far)!

This sweet boy is WILDLY affectionate and firmly believes there is NO such thing as too much attention. If he could crawl inside your skin to be closer to you, he probably would. He loves to give drive-by kisses, receive belly rubs, ear scratches, and pretty much any form of affection you have to offer.

He's curious, outgoing, and has settled in beautifully so far. In his first days of foster care, he's been completely neutral and respectful around dogs, cats, and kids. He hasn't shown any signs of reactivity and hasn't barked once—even when other dogs around him were making plenty of noise. And he LOVES to play with his foster brother - running, wrestling, jumping - he loves it all!

We're still learning about Kumba but we think this guy would be great with a moderately active family who has no problems with a 50 lb. lap dog!

Nugget was hit by a car and had to have his tail amputated and other injuries attended to. Now he needs to move from the Austin shelter on Levander Loop to his new foster home in Copperas Cove.

Keele is a friendly, wiggly 10 month old BC boy who was surrendered for chasing chickens (but it's so much fun!). This heartstopper of a ginger boy is already in a foster to adopt home, but we wanted to give him a big rescue welcome anyway!

Ariel is a 4 mo old BC mix who was surrendered by her owner. Ariel, in true BC fashion, was trying to herd the young child in the house and the family felt it would be better to find Ariel a new home. We are still learning about Ariel but we'll keep you posted!

SUPER-SPECIAL FOSTER OR FOSTER-TO-ADOPT NEEDED!

Samson was adopted from BCSAVE in 2022. About 3 yo and 74 lbs., Samson had his first seizure in late 2024 and since then, has had several seizures and been diagnosed with idiopathic epilepsy. He's been prescribed phenobarbital, which must be given 2x, approx. 12 hours apart.

His current family is unable to consistently administer his meds on this schedule, which can lead to additional seizures, and asked if we could find him a new home where he can get his medication regularly.

A giant teddy bear, Samson lives with kids, does well with people of all ages and is fine with other dogs (he has not been cat-tested since being a puppy). He is house-trained and leash-trained, though he can be a bit of a puller. He knows several commands, including sit, shake, lay, stay, wait and come.

His current owner got Samson DNA tested, and he's 41% Catahoula, 17% Cattle Dog, and 10% Border Collie (plus some other stuff). He's a gentle giant and super sweet.

We are looking for a foster who can manage Samson's medication regime (we would cover the cost) while we find him a FURever home. We would even love a FURever foster who could love and care for Samson (BCSAVE would cover his medical costs).

Kozzie is a sweet, friendly, wiggly 10-12 month old BC girl that was relinquished by a elderly owner that could no longer care for her. She is VERY food and toy motivated and is a very bright dog. She has been shown sheep and enjoyed her first introduction and we hope to continue with some form of interaction to herding and agility. Kozzie is being fostered in Folsom, Louisiana (which is about an hour north of New Orleans).

Winnie and Angel were living as strays in South Texas before being taken in by a good Samaritan. They could be siblings and are both around 1 year old, sweet, dog friendly, and social. They are currently being fostered in the S.TX area.
