Behind every great performance is a great story.

As we reflect on Juneteenth - a holiday of liberation, resilience, and community - we celebrate the diverse voices featured in Apollo's VENTURE concert. The final program of our American Story season highlighted the inspiring journey of Shirley K. Price, who overcame racial and physical barriers to become a leader in diversifying NASA and the American space program. Her story was brought to life through new music by John Cornelius, longtime professor at Prairie View A&M University, established in 1876 as the first state-supported college for Black Americans in Texas.

VENTURE featured a powerful conversation with Shirley K. Price, Ed.D., followed by the world premiere of Hidden Figures: Shared Orbits by Mark Buller and John Cornelius.

Today, we honor the resilience, achievements, and contributions of Black Americans whose stories continue to inspire future generations.

✨ Innovation, discovery, and collaboration.

Yesterday, Apollo Chamber Players had the distinct honor of serving as the featured opening ensemble for the 20th IWA Leading Edge Conference on Water and Wastewater Technologies at Rice University. We were proud to welcome an international audience of researchers, industry leaders, and innovators before a keynote presentation by NASA astronaut Tracy Caldwell Dyson.

As a Houston-based ensemble, it was especially meaningful to share the stage with one of our nation's leading explorers and to contribute to a gathering dedicated to advancing knowledge, resilience, and innovation. Through selections from Vivaldi's The Four Seasons and Apollo's arrangement of Malagueña, we celebrated the spirit of curiosity and collaboration that drives both science and the arts.

We are deeply grateful to Rice University, the Rice WaTER Institute, and the International Water Association for this invitation and collaboration. It was a true privilege to be part of such an inspiring exchange of ideas and perspectives from around the world.

Apollo Chamber Players had the honor of serving as the symposium’s keynote ensemble at Jones Hall in Houston on May 15, joining our dear friend, composer and keynote speaker Daniel Bernard Roumain (DBR), alongside the incredible students of HSPVA/AFA, including the Evergreen Quartet, for a performance of And Still We Cross — premiered earlier this past American Story season during our EMPOWER concert.

Centered around the theme We Are Here | Aquí Estamos, the symposium brought together teaching artists, program leaders, students, performers, and partners from across the country for days of learning, collaboration, dialogue, and music-making.

We are grateful to all presenters, participating programs, partners, donors, and attendees who contributed to this meaningful gathering and helped strengthen connections across the field.

Grateful to El Sistema USA for sharing these moments, and many thanks to Melissa Taylor for the beautiful photos 📸

We are delighted to share these images from VENTURE, the season finale of Apollo Chamber Players’ American Story series, presented on May 22 at MATCH.

At the center of the evening was the world premiere of Hidden Figures: Shared Orbit (Figuras Ocultas: Órbita Compartida), a new Apollo commission by Mark Buller and John Cornelius inspired by the lives of Shirley K. Price and Miguel Hernandez.

This project brought together musicians, composers, historians, educators, and artists in a uniquely Houston story. We are grateful to Shirley K. Price, Jennifer Ross-Nazzal, Iván Moreno, Jolie Rocke, and Lorenzo Martinez for their contributions, and to Marlo Saucedo for the beautiful VENTURE artwork commissioned by Apollo.
