The 2025 Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) Materials Guide is becoming a key reference for affordable housing projects and lists embodied carbon values for insulation materials. To get the most accurate values for these materials however, it’s worth digging deeper into Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for the products most commonly offered in the market, as well as reading up on spray foam’s recent move from HFC to HFO technology – a change that meaningfully cuts embodied carbon values for the high-performance insulation.

We are deeply saddened to share that our former colleague and friend, Randy Nicklas, has recently passed away.

Randy was an exceptional person whose positivity and kindness left a lasting impression on everyone around him. He had a unique ability to make people feel welcome, valued, and supported, and during difficult times, he somehow always found a way to make things feel lighter.

Beyond being a talented engineer, Randy was a respected pioneer within the spray foam and building envelope industry. Over the years, he contributed to numerous successful projects and earned the admiration of colleagues and clients alike through both his expertise and character.

The entire HBS team is thinking of Randy’s family, friends, and all those who had the privilege of working alongside him. Those of us who knew Randy will always remember him as a great person, colleague, and friend, and his impact on our team and industry will not be forgotten.
