VSLA Monitoring Visit Strengthens Accountability and Readiness in Rosint Community.

On 13th August 2026, the Bright Light Projects Sierra Leone team conducted a monitoring and evaluation visit to the VSLA group in Rosint Community.

The team engaged members preparing for the official opening of their box on 11th September 2026, marking the completion of the third annual cycle that began on 11th September 2025. Key discussions focused on accurate loan tracking, clearing outstanding debts, and ensuring transparent record-keeping. The group has also adjusted to earlier meeting times to accommodate their farming schedules under the VSLA Smart Agriculture Initiative.

Members expressed strong ownership of the process and requested branded T-shirts for the opening ceremony to promote unity, group identity, and visibility. This visit reinforces BLP’s commitment to supporting rural communities with financial literacy, agricultural empowerment, and sustainable livelihoods in line with Sierra Leone’s agenda.

BLP Community Resilience Pathway - From Vulnerability to Sustainable Livelihoods.

What began in 2016 in Sierra Leone as BLP’s Mend the Gap Schooling Program (MDG), supporting vulnerable Ebola orphans and survivors, has evolved through years of sustained community engagement.

As we recognized that supporting children also meant strengthening the families around them, BLP Mothers Clubs (BLPMC) were formed in 2019 to empower mothers and caregivers. These groups later evolved into Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs) in 2023, introducing financial literacy, savings, and access to small loans as pathways toward greater household economic resilience.

Today, that journey continues through BLP’s VSLA Smart Agriculture Initiative, integrating sustainable agriculture into existing savings groups to strengthen food security, household incomes, and resilient livelihoods.

The BLP Community Resilience Pathway – From Vulnerability to Sustainable Livelihoods reflects a simple principle at the heart of our work: lasting development is built step by step, by strengthening people, families, and the community structures they already trust.

“I was down and broken and hopeless.” Those are the words behind this photo essay, and they are also the reason BLP’s work matters.

Across West Africa, young people are telling their own stories of resilience, skill-building, and hope, from Girls Shall Rise to Young Men Entrepreneurship. As a youth-led organization, BLP walks alongside them with educational support, vocational training, mentorship, and the BLP three core pillars at the center.

This is what it looks like when hope becomes direction, and direction becomes a future.

From Survivors to Peacebuilders: A New Chapter for Young Women in Bamenda.

On 30 July 2026, Bright Light Projects (BLP), in partnership with the Women's Empowerment and Family Centre (WEFC) Bamenda I, convened a successful Regional Consultation on Young Women's Participation in Peace and Recovery in Bamenda. Bringing together conflict-affected young women, traditional and religious leaders, government representatives, civil society, educators, and community stakeholders, the consultation provided a platform for dialogue, healing, leadership, and collective action under the theme "Young Women Leading Peace, Recovery and Community Resilience."

The consultation culminated in two landmark achievements: the unanimous adoption of the Bamenda Declaration on Young Women's Participation in Peace and Recovery and the launch of the Young Women Peace and Recovery Network (YWPRN), a community-led platform that will empower young women to champion peace, reconciliation, and resilience across conflict-affected communities in Cameroon.

We are grateful to all our partners, facilitators, participants, and supporters who made this initiative possible. Together, we are proving that young women are not only survivors of conflict but also leaders, advocates, and architects of lasting peace.

From vocational skills to successful businesses.

On July 22, 2026, BLP Cameroon, in partnership with the Women Empowerment and Family Center (WEFC), brought together over 50 women and youth for a practical workshop on Entrepreneurship, Business Plan Development, Marketing Techniques, and Bookkeeping in Buea.

By bringing together current trainees, BLP graduates, and community members, the workshop created a valuable space for mentorship, peer learning, and the exchange of real business experiences. Participants gained practical knowledge in business planning, marketing, financial management, and entrepreneurship, essential skills for building sustainable livelihoods.

At BLP, we believe that learning a vocational skill is only the beginning. True empowerment comes when women and young people have the confidence, knowledge, and business skills to turn those talents into thriving enterprises that support their families and strengthen their communities.
