5 fun ways to build your child's vocabulary this summer!

Summer break does not have to mean a pause in learning. In fact, some of the richest language development happens outside the classroom. Here are five everyday activities that naturally build your child's vocabulary all season long:

Read together and make it a conversation. Reading aloud is always recommended, but the real magic happens in the discussion during and after. Ask wh- questions about the images or open-ended questions like "Why do you think she made that choice?" or "What would you have done differently?" These conversations push children to use new words in context, which is far more powerful than memorizing definitions.

Cook or bake together. The kitchen introduces children to a whole world of specific, descriptive language. Words as simple as chop and roast can be addressed, but so can more complex words like simmer, dissolve, translucent and knead are also fair play! Following a recipe also builds sequencing skills, which are closely tied to strong language development.

Tell stories together. Collaborative storytelling is one of the most underrated language tools out there. Start a story and let your child take it in any direction they want. This builds narrative language, the ability to organize thoughts and events in a logical sequence, which is one of the strongest early predictors of reading and academic success.

Turn errands into learning moments. Everyday outings are full of language opportunity. At the grocery store, ask your child to describe items before dropping them in the cart. What does it feel like? What color is it? What category does it belong to? This kind of descriptive and categorical thinking builds exactly the language skills that support reading comprehension in school.

Try a word of the day on your nature walk. Before heading out, introduce one new and interesting word together, something like canopy, serene or rustling. Challenge your child to spot something on the walk that connects to the word and use it in a sentence. Repeated, meaningful exposure to a new word is exactly how vocabulary grows and sticks long term.

The best vocabulary building does not come from flashcards or worksheets. It comes from rich, engaged conversation with the people your child loves most. If you have questions about your child's speech or language development, Advent Therapy Solutions is here to help.

"Just stick to one language." It's one of the most common pieces of advice bilingual parents get and one of the most harmful. Here's what the research actually says: bilingual children may say fewer words in each language separately, but their total vocabulary across both languages is on par with monolingual peers. That's a really important distinction. When we evaluate a bilingual child, we look at both languages together, not just one in isolation. A true speech or language delay shows up across both languages. It is not caused by learning two at once.

In fact, growing up bilingual comes with real cognitive benefits: stronger working memory, better attention, and greater mental flexibility. Two languages aren't a burden on a developing brain. They're a gift. If you have concerns about your bilingual child's speech or language development, the answer isn't to strip away half of their world. The answer is to get a proper evaluation from a speech-language pathologist who understands bilingual development.

Your child deserves to grow up speaking the language of their grandparents, their culture, their roots. Questions about your bilingual child's development? Contact Advent Therapy Solutions today!

May brings together three powerful observances: National Speech-Language-Hearing Month, Mental Health Awareness Month, and Stroke Awareness Month. At first glance they might seem separate, but they're deeply connected, and speech therapy sits right at the intersection of all three. Communication is at the heart of everything.

Communication and mental health are inseparable. When someone struggles to express themselves. Whether that's a child who can't find the words, a teen who avoids speaking in class, or an adult navigating a stutter, the emotional toll is real. Anxiety, isolation, and low self-esteem are common companions to communication disorders across every age group. Addressing communication needs isn't just about speech. It's about helping people show up more fully in their lives.

Stroke changes communication overnight. For many survivors, the loss of speech or language, known as aphasia, is one of the most disorienting and emotionally devastating effects of a stroke. Dysphagia (difficulty swallowing), dysarthria, and cognitive-communication challenges are also common. Early and consistent speech therapy can make a meaningful difference in recovery and quality of life, not just physically, but in helping someone reclaim their voice and their identity.

Private speech therapy meets you where you are, at every stage of life. From toddlers with late language emergence, to school-age children navigating reading and social communication, to adults recovering from neurological events, private sessions offer individualized, consistent care that goes beyond what any single setting can provide on its own. There's no waitlist for life to get harder. Having a dedicated therapist who knows your history, goals, and pace, in your corner, makes a difference.

This month, Advent Therapy Solutions is celebrating all three observances because we believe communication is a lifelong need, and everyone deserves support that fits their life.

Communication is one of the most human things we do. It is how we ask for what we need, share what we feel, and connect with the people we love. And from a toddler's first word to an older adult recovering from a stroke, that need never disappears. It simply changes shape.

We work with individuals across the entire lifespan because communication challenges do not have an age limit, and neither does the desire to be understood.

The toddler who is not yet talking, and the family wondering if they should be worried. The school-age child who struggles with reading, fluency, or following along in the classroom. The teenager navigating friendships and social situations with communication differences that make an already complex season of life feel even harder. The adult who has spent years avoiding phone calls, presentations, or conversations where their stutter might show. The stroke survivor relearning how to find words that once came easily.

Every single one of these individuals deserves skilled, compassionate, individualized support. And every single one of them reminds us why this work matters.

Speech therapy is not just for kids. It is for anyone whose ability to communicate is getting in the way of the life they want to live. The goals look different at every age: first words, classroom confidence, self-advocacy, professional presence, connection with family; but the heart of the work is always the same. We help people communicate, and through that, we help them show up more fully in their own lives.

Whether you are two or eighty-two, we meet you where you are.
If you or someone you love is navigating a communication challenge at any stage of life, reach out. We would be glad to be part of the journey.

Did you know you don't have to wait for the school to tell you something is wrong? School evaluations and private evaluations serve very different purposes, and knowing the difference can be incredibly important for your child. A school evaluation determines eligibility for school-based support, while a private eval looks at the full clinical picture, on your timeline. You can seek a private evaluation at any time. No referral. No waiting list. No eligibility threshold to clear. If something feels off, trust that instinct. Early action matters. Message Advent Therapy Solutions visit our website to learn more about our evaluation process.

At Advent Therapy Solutions, we offer comprehensive private evaluations and are here to help your family navigate every step of the process. Read through to understand the differences between school-based vs. private speech-language evaluations.
