Today, I had the privilege of attending HOPE Local 123's annual Juneteenth celebration, a meaningful opportunity to reflect on our history and the ongoing pursuit of opportunity and inclusion. HOPE keeps the City of Houston going. I was honored to celebrate alongside the dedicated city employees whose hard work helps make our city stronger every day.

On this Juneteenth, we honor the long journey toward freedom, reflect on the progress made, and recognize the work that remains. May we carry forward the spirit of this day by advancing equity, opportunity, and justice in all we do for our communities and our city.
Many thanks to Nancy Sims, government consultant and lecturer in the University of Houston Political Science Department, for highlighting the importance of Houston’s new Technology and Innovation Committee on Houston Matters.
This afternoon, we’ll hold our first meeting at City Hall, we’re talking artificial intelligence, Microsoft tools, and how technology can help improve city services. As Chair, I’m excited to explore innovative solutions that make government work better for Houstonians.
Join us today, June 18 at 2 PM at City Hall.

Thank you to the First Ward Houston community for a thoughtful conversation.
We took time to honor the life of Mary Catherine “Kitty” Shields, a neighborhood leader whose tragic death in a traffic accident has impacted the community and is a reminder of why safer streets matter. Last year, I launched Safe Pathways in District H, and this loss reinforces the urgency of continuing to invest in pedestrian and traffic safety improvements.
I look forward to working with my colleague in District C on opportunities to make this area safer.

I was so excited about launching Houston's new Technology & Innovation Committee that I ran to City Hall myself to make sure the meeting was posted on the board. This committee is about improving government operations, through technology and modernization while also fostering and strengthening our growing technology ecosystem.

Had a great time talking with neighbors at the Independence Heights Democratic Club Block Party! Every conversation is an opportunity to listen, learn, and remind each other that democracy is something we build together. Grateful to connect with so many residents committed to making our community stronger. Great to see Senator Molly Cook’s Grassroots Service Team there as well. Looking forward to continuing the work, one conversation at a time.
