Everything runs horizontal. Except one thing- the boat. In TIDE, the upward lines on the bow and stern cut right through the horizontal lines of the water and shore, creating a change in perspective - a subject for your eyes to lock on to.

I started this piece thinking about the classic striped lighthouses along the coast.

The bold red bands against white stones and a pale sky catches your eye, which is the exact reason they’re designed that way - to be visible from far out at sea, and that strong subject with stripes that demand attention make them really fun to use as artistic subjects.

Not every piece I create makes it to the finish line. Some never feel quite right, so I let them go. But every now and then, one surprises me.

Peaceful Walk was one of those. I nearly scrapped it. The colors weren’t right, there were some areas that just didn’t work. It felt off. I didn’t like it.
