****PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT****

We have been notified of a fundraising scam letter that was recently received by several City of Hot Springs residents. The letter claims to be from the National Police Association in Stafford, Texas, asks for donations and add the recipient’s name along with the names of other Hot Spring residents to the Quality of Life Policing Petition that will be presented to the Hot Spring City Council Members.

The letter urges recipients to check a box to add their name to a petition that will be presented to members of the Hot Spring City Council with suggested donation amounts ranging from $15 to $1,000. Please be aware that the group is not funding any program administered or endorsed by the City of Hot Spring or the Hot Spring Police Department.

HSPD would also like to make the public aware of other SCAMS that have recently been reported in Hot Springs and Garland County. These are the other recent scams:

1.- Unknown individuals are using artificial intelligence (AI) technology to simulate the voice of a victim’s family member or loved one. The caller claims to be an EMT and has information on said family member. After they have your attention, they change their story and state they are part of a cartel; the family member is in danger and demands money while threatening harm if instructions are not followed. In reported incident, the intended victims were able to contact their family member(s) directly and confirm they were safe and not in harms way. If you receive a call of this nature, remain calm, do not give out any personal information and contact your local law enforcement agency.

2.- Unknown individuals are calling residents claiming to be from District Court, a local law enforcement agency and at times will say they are a police officer. They will tell you that you have an arrest warrant, unpaid taxes or you missed jury duty and you need to pay a fine to take care of it. The scammer will ask you to go buy gift cards and call them back and provide the numbers of the gift card. They have been able to spoof local police department's phone numbers and citizens believe they are actually speaking with a police officer.

Do not fall for these scams, if you receive any calls like these, please call the Hot Springs Police Department at 501-321-6789.

To report any SCAM(s), you can contact the Attorney General’s Office at 1-800-482-8982
