Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) Awarenesss Month

FASD is lifelong. The needs may look different at 25, 45 or 65 than they did at 10, but challenges with executive function, regulation, memory and adaptive skills continue throughout life. Physical and mental health needs may change or become more complex with age, yet we know far too little about FASD and aging.

Often, people with FASD don't outgrow their need for support. They simply outgrow the systems that provided it.

When we talk about the future of FASD, adults and older adults must be part of the conversation - in research, healthcare, diagnosis, mental health and addiction treatment, housing, employment, disability services and long-term support.

FASD exists across the lifespan. Our response needs to as well.

You can’t “discipline away” brain differences.
Connection teaches more than correction.

Behavior plans and consequences cannot erase a brain-based disability. Real growth happens when people feel safe, connected, and understood enough to try new skills with someone beside them, not just someone judging from afar.
