Happy Juneteenth! This holiday, also known as Freedom Day, commemorates the day in 1865 when the enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, finally learned they were free, more than two years after President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. Today the day is celebrated with parades, family gatherings, and red foods symbolizing resilience, strength, and the blood shed by those who were enslaved.

The Cybrarium is closed today in observance of Juneteenth.

During Tiny Tots Storytime, we read "Daddy and Me" by Gary Urda and "Counting on Dad" by Valentina Jaskina. We played with our rainbow parachute and popped bubbles, too! For our craft, we decorated tie cutouts with stickers for Father’s Day.

During our Inkwell Writers Workshop, we practiced mindfulness and the art of noticing by creating a list of observations around us. Many of us noticed things others had not. Then we challenged our memory and noticing skills to create lists of pets we've had and places we've visited. Such focus on details is a key skill in bringing writing to life.
