Adult Sibling Estrangement Causes And Coping | NJ Therapist — Anchor Therapy, LLC 06/23/2026

If you are struggling with estrangement from your sibling, this is the blog for you.

"If you have a brother or sister you no longer speak to, you already know how strange the silence can feel. Maybe there was one blowup that ended things, or maybe the closeness slowly faded until the calls stopped and the holidays got quiet. Either way, you might feel a confusing mix of relief, guilt, and grief all at once. You're not broken for feeling this, and you're not the only one living it.

Adult sibling estrangement is the loss of contact or emotional closeness between adult brothers and sisters, usually because at least one person chooses distance to cope with an ongoing painful dynamic. It can look like full no contact, or it can look like two people who are polite at family events but share nothing real underneath. In this post, we'll walk through why estrangement happens, how common it actually is, what the grief can feel like, and what coping and reconciliation can realistically look like. We'll also share some of what we see in our work with clients here in Hoboken."

Some days the good stuff is loud and obvious. Other days it's quieter: the first sip of coffee, a text from someone who gets you, sunlight on the walk home. The good things are often already there, waiting to be noticed.

Noticing is a skill, and like any skill, it grows with practice. Try naming one small good thing today, then another tomorrow. Over time, your attention starts to tilt toward what's working instead of only what's missing.

If that feels hard right now, that's okay too. Sometimes a little support helps you find your footing again, and we're here whenever you're ready.

Pride has always been a celebration, and for years it has centered on bars and clubs, the places that first felt safe for so many. If you're in recovery, that can make June feel complicated. It doesn't have to. You can celebrate exactly who you are and protect your sobriety at the same time. 🏳️‍🌈

A few sober ways to celebrate this Pride:
Across the river in NYC: Sip & Paint: Sober Pride, a free alcohol-free art social on June 12 in Manhattan, and Dance on the River on June 28, the official sober event of NYC Pride. Both are a quick PATH ride from Hoboken.

Closer to home: NJ RoundUp hosts sober LGBTQIA+ gatherings across the state (their Sober Splash pool party is coming August 15 in Lincroft), and there's an LGBTQIA+ sober AA meeting community in Jersey City you can find through the AA Intergroup directory.

If this season feels heavy as much as joyful, please know you are not alone. Our licensed therapists support LGBTQIA+ people through recovery, identity, and everything in between, in Hoboken and virtually across NJ, NY, and FL for adults, teens, kids, and couples.

Today we honor Juneteenth, the day in 1865 when freedom finally reached the last enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.

Juneteenth is a day for reflection, remembrance, and celebration of the resilience and joy of Black communities. It is also a reminder that freedom and healing are ongoing.

However today finds you, we hope you have space to rest, reflect, and connect with the people who matter to you.

Gray Rock Method for a Narcissist | Hoboken NJ — Anchor Therapy, LLC 06/18/2026

If you're dealing with a narcissist in your life, this is the blog for you!

"If you’re stuck dealing with a narcissist you cannot simply walk away from, you already know how draining every interaction can be. Maybe it’s a co-parent, a boss, a coworker, or a family member, and going no contact is not an option right now. You may have searched for the gray rock method because you heard it can help you protect your peace when you have to keep showing up. The gray rock method is a way of becoming so calm, plain, and unreactive that a manipulative person loses interest in trying to get a rise out of you.

In this post, we’ll explain what the gray rock method is, why it works on people who feed off your reactions, and how to use it step by step. We’ll also be honest about its limits, including when it’s not safe to use and what to do instead. At Anchor Therapy, we help people work through narcissistic and toxic relationships every day."

Emotions aren’t problems to fix. They’re more like waves: they rise, they crest, and they pass.

So much of the struggle comes from fighting them, or bracing against them. But you don’t have to stop the wave. You can learn to feel it, breathe through it, and let it move on. That’s not something you’re born knowing. It’s a skill, and it’s one you can build.

If big emotions have felt like too much to ride lately, our licensed therapists are here. In-person in Hoboken and virtually across NJ, NY and FL.

The most underrated skill? Learning to reset. 💙

So much of what weighs on us isn't the hard moment itself, it's how long we stay attached to it. One missed workout, one off day, and suddenly it's a week of overthinking.

Here's the part worth holding onto: resetting is a skill, not a personality trait. It can be learned and practiced, and it gets easier with support. Be patient with yourself while you build it.
