KEAUKAHA

In collaboration with the 2009 graduating class of Ke Ana Laʻahana, we offer this design! Their perspective of Keaukaha pays honor to their homeland, ʻāina hānau, ʻāina pulapula.

The elements in this design illustrate their personal lives and dreams. The currents represent place (Ke-Au-Kaha) and tides. The receding tide is a metaphor for them leaving their home and the incoming tide symbolizes their return home to nurture with the experiences and knowledge they gained while away.

The ʻohe kāpala is their portrayal of ahi, describing the classmates as a school of ahi. They moved together, ate together and defended one another. That movement, like the fish in the ocean, was characteristic of their personalities.

ʻAWAPUHI KUAHIWI

The only native ginger of our islands, the name suggests the ginger growing in the upland wilderness. Growing abundantly in windward rainy districts, they are often found in the understory of a forest. During late summer, the plump fragrant juice pods are perfect for a shampoo and cleansing dip in the stream!

KAULILUAKŌIKEAO

The fresh, young tips of the ʻōhiʻa are prized for their color and making lei. They are gathered from in the early morning as they have been strengthened by the night’s moisture. These young leaf buds and colorful tips are called liko and are often mentioned in chant and song, sometimes referring to youth.

The name of this design, Kauliluakōikeao originates from one of the traditional mele pahu learned in hula. This design honors the newborn as the freshest liko, the prized leaf bud of the uplands.

The strike of an ulua will never be forgotten. If you get to see it happen, that vivid moment will always be remembered. It becomes ingrained in your blood… Hooking up into another one becomes an obsession. The preoccupation cannot be denied.

Our collaboration with S. Tokunaga focuses on being out there, protected, and bringing home the goods. Going holoholo is about finding that spot and setting that hook!

This collection includes a camo windbreaker, black snap back & a black beanie.

MAIʻAHUAWAENA

At Kahanu gardens, I studied this strange banana plant. The fruit was normal, hanging outside of its stalk. But the name Maiʻa Hāpai derives from the fruit sometimes developing inside the stalk. This would require a C-section to get the fruit!

I've read accounts that the bananas come out sparkling and ready to eat.
Maiʻa-hua-waena can be translated as “banana-fruit-center” as it sometimes develops inside the main stalk.

Will revisit the gardens in hope that we get to see the Maiʻa Hāpai inside its stalk!

ʻIEʻIE

One of the earliest hand-cut art pieces, the ʻieʻie represents the time when I was beginning to learn about the importance of the kinolau in our hula practice. Gathered from the forests surrounding the Hilo area, the ʻieʻie is the highest ranking plants when building the kuahu hula.

The aerial roots were woven into various objects like mahiole pōheoheo or basketry made into fish and shrimp traps for use in mountain streams. A treasured view of ʻieʻie vines growing on Oʻahu is from the H-3 highway as they climb the koa trees.

AWAIĀULU

Awaiāulu literally means to bind securely, as in a marriage. "Awaiāulu ʻia ke aloha i Hilo." My love is bound to Hilo.

The original art of twisted and braided kaula represents our ties to our hometown. With this reiteration, we reconfirm our love and kuleana of place.
