Divers are generally good at solving technical problems.
We can write procedures, create standards, improve training, and analyse incidents. Those approaches work well for many of the challenges we face.
But some problems don't behave that way.
Gareth Lock examines the difference between critical, tame, and wicked problems, and why some of diving's most persistent issues resist the kinds of solutions we naturally reach for.

Hyperbaric Medicine: Between Evidence and Overreach
Hyperbaric medicine grew out of diving medicine. Much of what we know about decompression sickness helped shape the field.
But as hyperbaric oxygen therapy expanded into other areas of medicine, a familiar question followed: where does the evidence end and the marketing begin?
Professor Richard Moon, Prof. Jacek Kot, and Dr. Evangelos Papoutsidakis discuss the history, the science, and the consequences of getting that distinction wrong.

What happens when you remove the survey line from the mapping process?
Daniel Lee and Jฤdrzej Mosiฤลผny set out to document Germanyโs Felicitas Mine without relying on traditional survey line methods, using a 360ยฐ camera, DPV lighting, and 3D mapping.

Today, my article about the Bel Torrente Multi-Siphon cave system was published in InDEPTH Magazine, and I am proud to finally share it with the community.
This article tells the story of years of exploration, discovery, challenges, and teamwork in one of Sardiniaโs most fascinating underwater cave systems.
A special thank you to Stratis Kas, who inspired me to write this article. Through countless interviews, discussions, and ongoing collaboration, we worked together to bring this story to life.
I would also like to express my sincere gratitude to my entire Protec Sardinia team and to all the explorers who have participated in the Bel Torrente Project over the years. Your dedication, hard work, and passion for exploration have made every achievement possible.
This publication is not just about a cave systemโit is about the people behind the exploration, the friendships built along the way, and the shared commitment to pushing the boundaries of discovery.
Thank you to everyone who has supported this journey. There is still more to explore, and the story of Bel Torrente is far from over.

A diver operating in a changing environment is constantly processing depth, time, gas, location, team position, and the task at hand. Situational awareness is not just about monitoring those elements. It is also about understanding what they mean and projecting what comes next.
Good situational awareness helps free up mental capacity for the dive itself and provides additional resources when problems arise.

Incident Report: Knowing When To Thumb The Dive
An important read from the InDEPTH Knowledge Base.
โSuccess is a lousy teacher if you get it right the first time.โ
A documentation diver reflects on a project dive that involved unfamiliar equipment, increasing task load, and a stuck inflator at depth. The account looks at limits, assumptions, social pressure, and the difficulty of saying no when a project matters.
